Elko County Fish Reports

Fishing is Starting to Pick Up

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Fishing is starting to pick up with several anglers reporting good fishing the past couple of weeks using flies, bait or spinners. Over the past few weeks SF has been stocked with approximately 55,000 rainbow trout. Fishing small PT’s, hares ears or chironomids under a strike indicator have all worked.  Snail patterns and black leeches with some red flash should also be effective.  Like most

Lake is Spilling

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The lake is full and spilling and the water is stained but not too badly.  Surface water temperatures are in the low to mid 50’s.  While fishing has ranged from good to excellent this spring, it has slowed a bit, to just good.   The usual PowerBait and worms for bait anglers have been working.  For fly fishermen, this is chironomid season, so midge larva and

Catfish and Trout Fishing Have Been Fair

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Very little change here as fishing is fair to good.  Trout fishing is fair to good, bass fishing is slow to fair, and fishing for catfish has been fair.  Some catfish in the one to three pound class (great eating size) have shown up in the creel.  The preferred bait for them here appears to be shrimp.  The usual PowerBait and worms as well as

Recent Trout Stocking

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Jiggs was stocked last week with approximately 2300 trout, 300 of which are surplus brood stock averaging around 12 inches.  The same presentations as at South Fork should work well here.  The shoreline is still muddy and anglers are being asked to keep their vehicles on the roads.

Harrison Pass is Open!

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Harrison Pass is open!  In addition, Secret Pass will be closed on Sunday, May 5 as a railroad crossing is installed on SR 229.  Other than that, not much has changed here as fishing continues to be good at the collection ditch for 13 to 18 inch trout with the occasional large trout being taken.  Small brightly colored spinners were doing well.  Wet flies have

Fishing is Good

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Fishing is good here and the dock is in the water.   The usual PowerBait and worms for bait anglers have been working.  For fly fishermen, this is chironomid season, so midge larva and emerger patterns as well as hares ears,  and PT nymphs.  Black or olive wooly buggers were taking fish as well. Anglers should be aware that many of the shorelines are muddy and

Reservoir is Full

The reservoir is full!  NDOW plans on planting the reservoir with crappie later in the spring when conditions improve.

Lake is Spilling Hard

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The lake is spilling hard and the water temperature is in the high 50’s and turbid.   Fishing is good for 12 to 15 inch fish that are in good shape. The same presentations, flies, baits and lures as used at South Fork, should also work well here.  The county road is rough with lots of potholes while the BLM road is fair with a few

South Fork Reservoir Fishing Report

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Very little change here as fishing at South Fork Reservoir is still slow to fair, with boaters doing better than shore fishermen.  Over the past couple of weeks SF was stocked with approximately 25,000 trout.     Fly fishermen fishing chironomids (midge larvae) are having the best luck.  Most of the trout being caught from shore have been in the backs of coves, along Jet Ski

Wildhorse/Southfork Stillwater Outing

by RENO FLY FISHING OUTFITTERS
Hey folks we still have a couple of spots open for our annual Stillwater Outing. Last year we hammered Rainbows and Smallmouth Bass at Wildhorse Resovoir. The lake is once again in Great shape and should be fishing very similar to last year. We had anglers with 30-40 fish a day on this trip. This is our favorite outing of the year and 90% of

Still 50 Percent Covered in Ice

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Wildhorse is still about 50% covered with ice, as of Thursday, April 18, and the shorelines are very muddy. With the warmer temperatures expect the lake to be completely ice free soon.  Fishing had been good through the ice and expect it to continue this spring.  The usual PowerBait and worms for bait anglers and for fly fishermen this is chironomid season, so midge larva

Lake is Starting To Open Up

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Jake Creek is mostly covered in very unsafe ice.  More of the lake is starting to open up with the warmer temperatures and there is open water for fishing, though there is no recent report on fishing conditions. Expect 4WD conditions to the reservoir once you left US 93 due to mud from snowmelt and rain.

Jiggs is Now Ice Free

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Jiggs is now ice free and there has been a winter kill observed here with dead bass and bluegill seen floating in the water. Hopefully it was a small one.  NDOW will be performing a fish survey here over the next couple of weeks, when shore conditions improve enough to launch a boat, in order to try to determine the extent of fish mortality. The

13 to 18 Inch Trout Being Caught

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Very little change here as the collection ditch is ice free with the warmer temperatures. Fishing continues to be good at the collection ditch for 13 to 18 inch trout with the occasional large trout being taken.  Small brightly colored spinners were doing well.  Wet flies have been performing better than the dries right now.  These include the usual small nymphs such as PT’s, hares

Some Anglers Limiting Out

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
South Fork is completely ice free and fishing has been fair, though occasionally anglers report catching a limit of fish. When anglers do report catching trout, they are averaging 16 to 18 inches with an occasional fish over 20 inches. Fly fishermen fishing chironomids (midge larvae) are having the best luck.  Most of the trout being caught have been in the backs of coves, along

Some Safe Ice for the Weekend

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
No recent report, but there should still be some safe ice here for the weekend, but make sure to drill test holes before going onto the ice.  However, with the runoff that is occurring, the water is rising and there is open water at the inlet end of the lake. No recent report on fishing conditions. Expect 4WD conditions to the reservoir once you left

Open But Extremely Muddy

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Jiggs has open water but it is extremely muddy here.  No report of anyone fishing here.

Wet Flies Preforming Better Then The Dries

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
First thing in the morning the road is frozen so not too bad for driving but once it warms up it becomes very muddy so slow down.  The collection ditch has a lot of open water with the warmer temperatures and fishing continues to be fair to good at the collection ditch for 12 to 16 inch trout with the occasional large trout being taken.

24 Inches of Ice, Slush and Snow

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
There is approximately a combined 24 inches of ice, slush and snow.  With the warmer weather next week expect the slush to increase so go prepared with good boots.  The ice is still safe, but getting around on an ATV may become difficult.  Fishing for trout and perch has slowed a bit, so we are downgrading the report from good to fair.  Trout can still

Open Water and Unsafe Ice

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The road is still 4WD, especially in the afternoons with the warmer weather turning the road very muddy.   No recent report, but expect open water and unsafe ice.

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The road to Angel Lake is now closed and there will be no fishing report here until late spring or early summer depending upon how the winter snows are.

Fishing has been slow to fair, though occasionally anglers report catching a half dozen fish in shallow (3 feet deep) water near shore. A few 20+ inch trout were taken in this area last week by fly rodders.  Trout are still being

Nevada Angler Ties 1987 Record for Yellow Perch

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Nevada angler John Shorter III has proved yellow perch are making a comeback in Wildhorse Reservoir after tying a record that has been held for more than 30 years. Shorter caught the 1-pound, 8-ounce, 13.5- inch long perch on Feb.16 at the reservoir, which ties the state record caught by Warren Todd Goodale in 1987 at Dufurrena Pond. “He’s had the record since 1987, so he’s
