Elko County Fish Reports

Ice growth has been extremely slow to nearly nonexistent at South Fork Reservoir this year. As of 2/14/25, State Park staff reported large areas of open water with very thin ice present along the majority of the shoreline. These conditions are NOT safe for ice fishing. 

Stocking – Fish in the Humboldt River are self-sustaining and stocking is not necessary. Regulations – Limit is 5 trout and 15 warmwater game fish of which not more than 5 may be largemouth bass and 5 may be walleye. For the Humboldt River from Stahl Diversion Dam (near Golconda) to the downstream border of Humboldt County, live baitfish and aquatic bait from the Humboldt

The reservoir is ~90% frozen with unsafe ice. With warmer temps in the forecast, it is likely that ice will continue to degrade.

S Fork ice update. There is not currently sufficient ice to support travel of any kind. Open water covers large portions of the lake, with relatively thin ice along much of the shoreline. Ice is NOT safe for fishing. Be safe and have fun out there.

As of 2/13/25, park officials measured 10″ of ice off the boat ramp. In the coves of Hendricks Arm and Penrod Arm, anglers are reporting ice 10″-12″. Trout are being caught in the 16″-22″ range, and trout are measuring 6″-10″. The reservoir will be extremely busy this weekend due to the ice fishing derby. Good morning everyone! We measured 7” of ice off the boat ramp going about 100 yards out. There are several sections of open water north and south of us. The edges are soft with open water in certain areas. We will be getting colder weather in a couple of days, which we hope will help with ice formation, but we will see. As of now,

It’s nice seeing ice anglers out and about enjoying some ice fishing this weekend! We are seeing nice sized trout and anywhere from 8-10” perch being pulled out of the reservoir! We will be getting snow tomorrow, so please prepare accordingly! The surface is still really slick, so cleats are recommended. Our gift shop now sells them in case you forget them or need more.

The warmer days haven't had too much of an impact on ice conditions yet. Several areas along the shoreline of both sides of the lake are averaging between 5"-7" of clear ice. Watch for changes in conditions as we get wet weather this weekend. Always double-check thickness and be alert for sudden changes. Pressure ridges abound. Ice Update: Good news! Areas off of Coyote Cove and Jet Ski Beach on the southwest shoreline, as well as some of the coves on the east side are measuring 4-5 inches, and are considered sufficient for foot travel. Pay close attention as there are many pressure ridges around the lake, and ice thins the further you get from shore. Always do an assessment of current conditions

Ice Update! Currently we are averaging 5 inches around the boat dock! However, there still is portions of the reservoir with open water. So please check the ice if you choose to go out on it. State Park staff is reporting 5″ of ice in holes sampled near the boat launch. Be advised, this is glare ice, and is extremely slippery. Anglers are reporting ice measuring up to 10″ in some of the coves of the Hendricks arm and Penrod arm. Ice thickness is variable across the reservoir and conditions can change daily. Ice Update: South Fork is almost entirely frozen over, with a relatively thin "skin" of ice, measuring 1-2 inches at its thickest points. At this time, the lake is NOT considered safe for ice fishing. There also does not appear to be any spots along the shore currently for open water fishing access. It is a beautiful morning here on Wildhorse Reservoir and we have some great news! The area that had open water last week now has nice clear ice! Today was a GREAT DAY out at the Untamed Pony! The day started out slow but boy oh Golly did it pick right up after a few location changes ! • 6 Large TROUT !!! Smallest was ONE 22 incher. •64 PERCH • 3 Small Mouth bass Ice Update : most of the north side from hendricks north into canyon has solid ice 11- 13 inches. !

Ice is beginning to form on the open water areas! We are going to give it a few more days before trying to get measurements, but it has been getting thicker each night for the past few nights!
