Western Nevada Fish Reports

Word out of Pyramid Lake is that the fishing is the best in years

by RENO FLY FISHING OUTFITTERS
Wow! What a fall at Pyramid. This has been the best fall fishing out at the lake in recent history. The new strain of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout continue to grow and offer anglers the chance to catch a fish of a lifetime. Several fish over 20 pounds and a couple in the 25 pound class have been caught over the past month or so. Lots

The Nevada side of the Truckee River is the best to fish right now

by RENO FLY FISHING OUTFITTERS
Flows on the Truckee remain excellent. The river is closed from Tahoe City down to the Town of Truckee until the last Saturday of April. The flows are a little low from Truckee down to the Boca Bridge area but they are really good down stream of that. The Nevada side of the River is in the best shape right now especially with the cold

What is the best way to fish the Truckee when the weather is cold?

by MATT KOLES
A cold snap is here on the Truckee River in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area. Highs won't make it out of the 20's here in Truckee, and the lows will be low. What's that mean for the fishing? Well, honestly, it pretty much sucks when it's this cold. What you mostly get is ice in the guides and unwilling fish. Fish can be caught, but it

Water temperature has plunged into the 40s but shore anglers continue to get large fish. A 20.13 pounder was caught from shore and a 16 pounder was the biggest cut landed via boat. Shore anglers do well at Block House, Monument and Warrior. Boaters work offshore those spots. Tahoe Fly Fishing (530) 541-8208, (775) 476-0400

The Truckee cold weather has lowered the water temps & put the fish into transition

by MATT KOLES
Feels a lot more like winter here in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area on the Truckee River. This last weeks storm system gave us a little snow and kept daytime temps relatively cold. That has lowered water temps and put fish on the transition. Probably best to change up your game plan from summer time tactics to more winter time tactics. Trout will move into

Jig deep water for mackinaw. Browns and rainbows are in the shallows in the morning. Overcast and choppy conditions will provide cover for the trout and keep them in the shallows for extended periods. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593 www.tahoetopliners.com

Two 20 pound trout have been verified in the past two weeks. The most recent was a 20.15 pounder caught by Jeffrey Macedo of Lovelock, NV from the Blockhouse. A 19.8 and 15.9 also were landed last week from shore. Shore anglers are getting the bigger fish but boaters continue to hook large numbers of cutthroat. Truckee needs a snow dance but the mild weather has kept the fishing good

by MATT KOLES
Can someone please do a snow dance? Feels more like early October than November in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area on the Truckee River. I think everyone in Truckee is a little anxious. Our town revolves around snow. The mild weather has kept the fishing good though. Fish are all spread out. Pocket water, riffles, deep slow stuff, all over. That will change with colder weather,

Little change here. Jigging for mackinaw is reliable although size of fish fluctuates daily. More rainbows are showing for trollers. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593 www.tahoetopliners.com

Fish are still on the bite in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area

by MATT KOLES
Pretty much everywhere on the river is fishing well, both states, California, and Nevada. In California wait a bit, the very cold mornings put the bite off until mid-day. In Nevada it's pretty much good to go, all around, all over. We have baetis in the afternoons pop'n. Look for a cloudy day and you'll see risers, or go out to the LT and it

Shore fishing really picked up with the south end getting the big ones from Popcorn all the way up to the nets.  Shore fishers were starting to bring in 20 plus pounders at the Willows and Warrior Point.  The bait balls have gone down to about 100feet with the trout still laying from 30 to 40 feet. The trout are still hitting on just about any

Flows are winter-time low and clear. Fishing with streamers will work in the morning if offered in dark corners. Blue wing olives and mahagony duns come off during the day. Small black nymphs can be effective. Glenshire has been a good spot but action is best below Hirschdale where there more water. Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters (530) 587-4844. Fishing the Truckee River in November

by MATT KOLES
November is a real sleeper month for fishing here on the the Truckee River. Fishing can be very good this time of year depending on the weather. The California side of the river should fish good until the end of this month, then winter sets in and it's hit and miss until around February. The Nevada side will fish well all month into December, well,

The Truckee is fishing well all over

by MATT KOLES
Indian Summer here in the greater Truckee-Tahoe Reno area on the Truckee River. I think it's been warm all over the West. This next week though things will change and we will once again get back into more normal fall, early winter weather. Rivers been fishing well all over. Anywhere you go you should pick up some fish. Mostly we've been nymphing, and streamer fishing.

Wind and snow kept a lot of anglers away. The days before accounted for a lot of large fish. Boaters continue to do better but shore anglers are getting their share.  Trout this year are heavier than recent years. Better tui chub populations have led to larger cutthroat. Matt returns from fishing the Missouri in Montana & discusses current & future Truckee fishing

by MATT KOLES
Just got back from vacation. Yes, I fished all week out on the Missouri River in Montana. Lot's of fun indeed. Was back at the office today and seems like we continued where we left off. Warm comfortable days, cold nights=good fall fishing on the Truckee River. It's mostly a baetis party out there now, and you should have you favorite micro mays in your

Little has changed. Mackinaw jig bite is good. Macks are off all the shorelines. Conditions are solid for toplining for rainbows in the shallows. Some browns in the mix. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593 www.tahoetopliners.com

Good mackinaw fishing. Vertical jigging in water 100 to 220 feet deep, depending where you find the fish. Fishing is good all over the lake – east shore, west shore and south shore. Rainbows are moving into the shallows and a few browns are mixed in. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593 www.tahoetopliners.com
