Hinkson Slough is back!

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Hinkson Slough is back! – After two years of repairs and rehabilitation, Hinkson Slough is healthy and fishing very well. NDOW Angler Education joined Project Healing Waters and the High Sierra Fly Casters to celebrate the opener and Hinkson didn’t disappoint! The annual event was free and open to anyone and everyone. Those that made it out enjoyed coffee, donuts, tackle, flies, and utilized NDOW

Pyramid has fished very well this week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Pyramid has fished very well this week. The fish have begun to consistently hang in shallow water, and the beaches with a gradual drop offs have started to really fire off. This is an excellent sign for great spring fishing conditions ahead. These beaches are where using a ladder will really come into play.  We have noticed a serious drop off in the effectiveness of balanced

The river came up a lot

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The river came up, a lot. This will make fishing here a bit tougher for the next few days, but certainly not impossible. If you are looking to fish the river right now, pick your location wisely. The long slow deep runs primarily found in the canyon will likely be your best shot at finding good holding water.  This is also an excellent time to fish

The midge bite is on!

by RENO FLY SHOP
What a change a few weeks can make. The lake surface temperatures have come up 5 degrees, and the midge bite is on! Indicator fishing has proven to be the best technique as of late, with a few fish coming on the strip on overcast days. I think the water needs to warm up just a little more to really kick on the strip bite.

A series of storms have increased flows and decreased clarity on the Truckee River

by RENO FLY SHOP
A series of storms have increased flows (link here) and decreased clarity on the Truckee River this past week. While flows haven’t been limiting the clarity have slowed down bugs and fish feedback. The flows have already dropped back to accessible levels and we anticipate the clarity to improve quickly. While it is transitioning back to clearer water we encourage all to try fishing worm

Unless the storm door opens up, expect slow conditions

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
At Pyramid Lake, fishing has been slow for most anglers. Unless the storm door opens up, expect slow conditions. The water levels at Pyramid Lake are currently at 90% capacity.

The Truckee River is currently offering good winter fishing conditions with the higher flows

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Water Conditions The Truckee River is currently offering good winter fishing conditions with the higher flows. Flows are 80 cubic feet per second in Tahoe City, through Truckee, it is flowing around 398 CFS and 740 CFS near Farad and the stateline. With the heavy rains, water is a bit high and dirty right now on the lower section of the California side. All and all,

Topaz Lake Fishing Report

by DOUG BUSEY
I spoke with Dana Judd this week. He ventured up last week and said the fishing was slow, but did have some luck on nightcrawlers from the  west shore past the bug station. This week, I would wait a little before heading down the shore. With the rains we just got, we don't need anyone to get stuck. For boaters, I would get up a

Rain and snow!

by MATT KOLES
Rain and snow! Yes, we need it. Every Winter is finger nail bitting on the Truckee River.  Look for the river to come up, how much? Well, probably not as much as you think. It's 400 cfs right now in Hirschale and going up. She'll come up lots more, but next week the rain will turn to snow, so it should drop back down quick.  Usually the best

Pyramid has kicked right back into gear

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Pyramid has kicked right back into gear over the last week or so, and the fishing remains great right now. The fish are really starting to transition on to some of the shallower beaches and beginning their pre-spawn feeding habits.  When fishing shallow and gradual beaches, midges are often the bug of choice and fishing 6-8 feet is a good place to start, depending on the

The Bites Been Starting Off Slow

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
With the last week of cold weather, we’ve been seeing the bite start off pretty slow, even through mid-day, with the best fishing often being from around 1:00 until dark. As of now the water has been cold and clear and the smaller flies are going to be the ticket when these conditions are present.  Over the last week we have been doing best on midges

It’s good out and will only get better

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
Out playing on a weather day. It’s good out and will only get better. Cole stuck his new pb this afternoon with the boys!

Cold weekend on the the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Cold weekend on the the Truckee River. Brrr. Better for football watching than fishing.  Things look to warm up this week, and fingers crossed some rain and snow in the mix. We need to get that rain and snow. Keeps the fishing good through Summer, and will get it going now, Winter. We have the blue wing olives coming off now down on the lower Truckee River East

The lake continues to fish ok

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The lake continues to fish ok all things considered, and it seems like suspending two midges 6-8 feet under an indicator on some of the rockier beaches has been the best producer during these sunny days.  In the early morning hours, fish are being caught on buggers and beetles on a full sink line, but by mid-morning when the sun hovers directly over the lake with

Plenty of good fishable river miles on the Truckee

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
With the flows around average for this time of year and the water cold and clear, the fish are very keyed in on the “LBS” or Little Black Stuff, right now. This term includes Blue Wing Olives and Midges around a size 18-22.  Although it’s in the name, the flies certainly don’t have to be black. When we’re fishing midge larvae, we’ve been doing great on

The Big Fish Bite Continues

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
Sunny days are here and then sunny days are gone. If anyone has followed or researched fishing Pyramid Lake they knows that this time of year that wind + clouds at Pyramid Lake can make the fish party like it’s 1999. Butttt…….. Just like the conditions we had this week, with the days of bright skies, the fish still made indicators drop and abrupt stops

Will it snow again?

by MATT KOLES
Will it snow again? Hopefully soon for the Truckee River watershed. Very cold at night, and warm afternoons. Flows are good and everything right now, but I get environmental anxiety. That's a real thing. For now, typical Winter stuff. Smaller stuff is you're nymphing. You can jig streamers on the euro rig, or fish the big stuff and strip. Usually the big stuff ain't so great in

Fishing out here has been tough

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
With the high-pressure days as of late, fishing out here has been tough. But there are still some good bite windows to be had. These are mostly in the early morning hours, at or just after sunup. This is a great time to really focus on either fishing midges under the indo or put in some serious time stripping. Stripping will be a particularly good

The river continues to fish well

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The river continues to fish well along most sections. The Glenshire area has continued to kick out some great dry fly fishing most days and they seem to be keyed in on midges primarily. Midge cluster patterns such as a Griffith’s Gnat have been productive as well as individual midge patterns like a para midge or fowler’s midge.  Further downstream, the name of the game would

OTW | Truckee River and Pyramid Lake | mid January 2025

by RENO FLY SHOP
Mike Anderson with your On-the-Water report from the Truckee River 1/16/2025. Small dark flies are your friend during the colder months. Some dry flies will happed on overcast calm days, that is also a good time to try a steamer in slow water. At the Pyramid Lake, indicator fishing has been best with most fish caught from 6-10 feet. Lighter colored balanced leeches have seemed

The lake level is slowly rising at about 3-6 inches a week

by DOUG BUSEY
The lake level  is slowly rising at about 3-6 inches a week. The Douglas County boat ramp is open and has only the middle dock in right now. Use a little patience and courtesy launching and coming back in. Shore angling was slow this last week. Most anglers were fishing the south end with powerbait or night crawlers. Trollers were using flashers and worms or

East Walker River Report

by KENS SPORTING GOODS STAFF
Haven’t really talked to anyone who’s been hitting up the Rosachi, or the Sceirine lately, so I don’t really have much to report. If you’re heading down there I would expect the best time of the day to be from about 10am to 3pm or so because of the colder temperatures. The last couple anglers I did talk to had the best luck with streamers

Cold nights, warm afternoons on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Cold nights, warm afternoons on the Truckee River. Upper teens in Truckee at night, 40's in the afternoons. Lets look at that.. When it's really cold at night, that's really going to lower the water temps. That will put the fish in the very slow water, frog water as we like to say. You will have to poke them in the nose with your flies. I would
