Western Nevada Fish Reports

23 lb. LCT

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Pyramid has really kicked into gear over the last few weeks, and a big part of this is due to the continued low-pressure systems in the area. Last week Tristan Best of Truckee netted an impressive 23.8 pound fish, caught under an indicator. The bite for both techniques has been pretty even, with the strip bite and indicator bite both having their days and even

The flows on the Truckee River have stabilized over the last week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The flows on the Truckee River have stabilized over the last week, and as of today we are seeing flows around Hirschdale sitting at +/- 600 CFS. With these flows the river is considered fishable, but there will be some challenges present if heading out for the day. The first challenge when fishing here on the California side and into Verdi will be parking. As

Another big AR on the way for the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Here we go again. Another big AR on the way for the Truckee River. Northern Ca has been getting hammered. Hopefully, no major flooding, but for some places in Ca, it’s likely. I hope for for everyone, your houses and families are safe. Flows: Hard to say what the flows are going to do here. You never know with these big warmer storms. Just depends on how

The bite has really switched on this week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The bite has really switched on this week, and for those waiting patiently to fish out here, now’s the time! It seems that all methods of presenting a fly are working out here, depending on the where and the when. The bobber will fish best when fishing off of sandy shelfs 6 feet or greater, or if fishing around rocky outcroppings where snags are present.

Truckee River Fishing Report

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The Truckee River saw a great flush of water with last week’s big rain event peaking at over 3,000 CFS and now settling down to around 500 at the Boca confluence. For reference, this time last year the river was holding at around 300, so it just goes to show what a few good storms can do! These big flushes of water are not only

On-the-Water Report- Pyramid Lake and Truckee River

by RENO FLY SHOP
Reno Fly Shop staff, Aden Breckner, with this week’s On The Water Report for early January! Both the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake have fished well on the right day as multiple storms pass through the region. The Truckee has seen increased flow and turbidity but continues to produce. Pyramid Lake is firing on all cylinders with the active weather pattern and should continue to

Got A Trip In Before The Next Storm

by HANS MOXLEY

The Return of the Midge

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
The New Year brings a fresh opportunity to experience Pyramid Lake As we spring into the New year with tremendous amounts of rain and snow the lake levels begin to rise and the fish start sliding into a more "normal", feeding schedule.  We have been catching a lot more summits than normal for this time of year and they are fired up and ready to party!

What a crazy winter on the Truckee River already

by MATT KOLES
I’d say we’re doing pretty good snow wise now. That last storm was no joke. The Truckee River could have hit flood stage, if on Saturday, the rain hadn’t turned to snow. Then we got about 2 feet after about 5 inches of rain. River rose up to about 4000k here in Hirschdale, and now is back down to around 800 cfs. We have great fishy

The bite remains pretty spread out throughout the day

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
While the bite out here remains steady, we wouldn’t say its been red hot. Typically the top months for winter fishing will be the months of February and March, as this is when shore anglers will typically run into the largest fish this lake has to offer, regularly weighing over 20 pounds. As for now, the average reports have been 3-5 fish days with a

Fishing should look good for the start of 2023

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
We are happy to see the river come up this week on the big Truckee and while today it’s high and muddy, we should see flows settle down and the clarity improve in a day or two, especially as the tail end of this storm transitions from rain to snow coming into the New Year. It will be tough to tell how the flows will

Fly fishing at Pyramid Lake continues to improve with each passing week

by RENO FLY SHOP
Fly fishing at Pyramid Lake continues to improve with each passing week as we reach the end of 2022. Active weather patterns have helped improve fishing conditions and should continue to do so through the first week of the new year. As fish continue to feed in areas adjacent to the shoreline, a variety of flies have fished well depending on the type of beach

Nymphing the Truckee River is an effective option when flows are in flux

by RENO FLY SHOP
The Truckee River received a flush at the beginning of the week. Flows in Reno increased significantly on December 27th and have begun to decrease at a slow rate over the last two days. At the time of this writing, the Truckee River at Reno gauge shows 310 cfs.  As of Thursday (12/29), river clarity has improved dramatically and flows have dropped into an ideal level.

Merry Fishmas to You All

by DOUG BUSEY
Hello fellow anglers, and a very Merry Fishmas to you all. In just over a week 2022 will end and hopefully the new year will bring us good health and well being. All I wished for Christmas this year was a good snow pack to fill our lakes and streams, so we can all gather at our favorite fishing holes. Most of those fishing holes

The cold has has transformed Pyramid Lake into a winter wonderland

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
Lake Conditions No denying that winter is here, and it’s cold embrace has transformed Pyramid Lake into a winter wonderland. This doesn’t mean things slow down for the Cutthroats though, they have stayed on the chew and we have been eagerly tracking ‘em down and getting them into the net. The past week and a half we have seen air temps ranging from day time highs

Fish have been in close with the cold weather

by PYRAMID LAKE FLY FISHING
Temps: 38-43* Fish have been in Close with the cold weather. Fishing has been best with stormy days or windy days! Fishing in 10ft of water or less. Indo: Fishing a black balance leech with a black zebra midge or a red nymph underneath have been our top producers. Stripping: strip bite been really good! Running a white/chartreuse beetle with a bloody Mary or midnight cowboy behind it

Defiantly worth braving a little cold this morning

by HANS MOXLEY
Defiantly worth braving a little cold this morning Thanks guys, good trip. Hope to see you again

The lake continues to improve as surface temps drop

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The lake continues to improve as surface temps drop, and fish remain higher in the water column later in the day and they can also be often be found just 20-30 feet off the shoreline where any significant drop off is located. When fish are found in shallow like this, fishing an indicator will work best as it keeps your flies in the potential cruising

Truckee River Fishing Report

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
With low flows and limited access here in town, anglers looking to fish the Truckee are encouraged to head downstream in search of the slight increase in flows around Farad. The city of Reno continues to take water out of the river around Mogul, decreasing flows back below 100, and it doesn’t gain more volume until east of Sparks around Lockwood or Mustang Ranch. In our

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

by RENO FLY SHOP
The storms that passed through our region throughout the first two weeks of December improved fishing at Pyramid Lake. On many days, a combination of rain, snow and wind moved into the area and improved the bite along the shoreline. With colder water temperatures and storms typical of early winter, the fish have moved into shallower water.  Both stripping and indicator setups were effective through the
