Southern Nevada Fish Reports

The long holiday weekend brought a lot of recreational traffic into the area. Stripers nearing 10 pounds are taking anchovies near Big Bend State Recreation Area while crankbaits are fooling black bass along the river. Catfish are actively taking bait during the early morning or at night. Worms have been the trick for catfish in the shallows where the vegetation is thicker.

With increasing temperatures, fish and humans both are seeking respite in the shadows. Look for fish in pockets of shade throughout the morning hours. Anglers are still catching rainbow trout now and again, but reports are few. Bluegill and largemouth bass are going to be more common during warm months. This is the season for kayakers and striped bass at Willow Beach. Look for the fish in deeper water. Anchovies and shad imitations are taking the fish. Rainbow trout are rare finds but not impossible to catch. Anglers are seeing smallmouth bass in coves throughout the reservoir. Soft plastics in green and red are catching the fish.

Activity at the lake has increased along with angler action. Bluegill are taking night crawlers fished below a bobber at Government Wash and Echo Bay. Striper fishing is good during sunset and sunrise hours. Shad seem to be the answer. A pair of lucky anglers got into a striper boil this week and pulled in several fish in the 18- to 20-inch class. Roads to Spring Valley State Park, home to this reservoir, remain closed due to recent flood activity.

Nevada Department of Wildlife staff and volunteers will be on hand Friday at 6:30 p.m. for Friday Flies, a class where you can learn to tie your own fishing flies. Big Bend has been productive for anglers chasing largemouth bass with spinnerbaits, flat worms and leech plastics. Striped bass action is picking up along the river. Anglers have been catching stocked rainbow trout with nymphs, PowerBait and night crawlers

With increasing water temperatures, black bass are becoming more active, especially at sunrise. Anglers have caught striped bass and black bass with anchovies, plastics and shad. Windy conditions have made fishing difficult.

Bluegill are starting to hit baits in the late mornings. Fishermen also are finding a few catfish, probably holdovers from last summer. Soft plastics have been productive. The best action is coming to those fishing after sunrise or at sunset. Those times of day allow for a higher success rate, plus it is cooler at those times.

With a launch ramp now available at Echo Bay, anglers are taking the opportunity to pursue crappie in the Overton Arm. Many anglers have found good fishing for channel catfish and striped bass. They are using shad or anchovy chunks to catch the fish. Government Wash is a striper hotspot though it has seen a slowdown in recent days. Rat-L-Traps and jigs fished in the
