Fishing has been good the past couple of weeks despite afternoon winds. At Haymeadow, anglers have been pulling out rainbows using dark-colored Woolly Buggers and Rooster Tails. Nymphing patterns, like red or black zebra midges, are also good fly-fishing options. Crappie action should pick up soon at Cold Springs. Brightly colored jigs will catch the fish. So too will root beer colored Woolly Buggers.

Kayakers trolling swimbaits are reeling in striped bass upwards of 20 pounds. On Lake Mohave, anglers are enjoying improved black bass action. Reports of both largemouth and smallmouth bass catches are coming in from Cottonwood Basin and in the south out of Katherine Landing. Anglers are having the most success using red and green plastics.

Catfish Recently Stocked

Local anglers have been hitting the ponds with chicken livers and night crawlers to catch recently stocked channel catfish. In addition, bluegill are biting mealworms and night crawler pieces at Sunset, Lorenzi, and Floyd Lamb Parks later in the day. Kingman Wash is the hot spot for striper fishing. Anglers are catching the fish from shore using cut anchovies. The largemouth bass bite is on at the north end of Boulder Basin. This is a great story our local angler Mike Lamere landed a couple of nice stripers in the 5-pound range. These 2 were 5.76 pounds at 25 and 1/2 inches and 5.12 pounds at 25 and 1/4 inches all while fishing from shore. In the eastern region stream flows are down a bit from last week. Most streams are below the median for this time of year, many well below. The recent precipitation may make for some muddy driving conditions on the back roads. As of April 15, Kingston Creek was flowing at 3.1 cfs.

Rainbow trout action has improved as the reservoir has risen over the past couple of weeks. Rainbows are taking worms and a variety of PowerBait colors. Fly fishers have found good action with Woolly Buggers and Snow Cones.

Though seasonal trout plants have stopped for the summer; rainbow trout are still hitting baits at sunrise and sunset from Davis Dam through Casino Row. The fish are taking Rooster Tails, PowerBait, and worms. Black bass are biting on plastics and crankbaits. Catfish are biting on anchovies and chicken livers below Big Bend State Recreation Area.

Lake Mohave is producing double-digit stripers

Lake Mohave is producing double-digit stripers. Stripers are taking anchovies and jointed rainbow swimbaits. Anglers are bringing in a few rainbows below Willow Beach on PowerBait, worms, and Rooster Tails. Black bass continue to spawn in coves. Smallmouth are taking plastics and jigs in coves with vegetation.

Channel catfish were hitting lines at Floyd Lamb and Sunset Parks over the weekend. Anglers used night crawlers and stink baits. 

Black bass action is good

Black bass action is good. The fish are hitting drop-shot rigs and deep-diving crankbaits. Stripers are taking anchovies from shore in the Government Wash area and outside of Hemenway Harbor. Shad and trout pattern swimbaits also are catching the fish. Crappie fishing is peaking in the Overton Arm. Anglers are tying on chartreuse jigs and tubes.

We have some great news the fishing for the stripers is picking up. Our local anglers are reporting hook up and down the Colorado River here below the Davis Dam. I have heard a little bit from up on Lake Mohave but no good reports of as of yet mostly the stripers up on the lake have been in the 2-to-3-pound range while on the river

Roads are drying out and access is improving but in narrow canyons with less sun expect frozen ground in the morning and possible mud in the afternoon.
