Willow Beach anglers continue to enjoy rainbow trout action from the fishing pier and nearby shorelines. PowerBait and night crawlers are the most popular choices. The Nevada Department of Wildlife has begun its seasonal rainbow trout plants. The fish are taking spinners in the mornings and night crawlers throughout the day. There are a few catfish still biting in the ponds. They have been hitting night crawlers and shrimp. Shrimp are a legal bait because they are not considered to be a fish or fish parts.

Topwater action continues for striped bass

Topwater action continues for striped bass in the Boulder Basin. Bone-colored pencil poppers and Whopper Ploppers are taking hits. Ned rigs are the go-to setup for black bass throughout the Las Vegas Bay, Callville Bay, and surrounding coves. For a catfish hookup, try frozen anchovies in shallow and grassy coves after dark.

I have some lake news from our local angler Jennifer Gonzales landed a nice 9.22-pound striper at 29 and 7/8 inches. Lake Mohave has been having some striper action by the power lines and near the dam. There have been a few sightings of fish boils so watch for ripples and or birds flocking to the boils to feed on the shad.

Striped bass in the 1- to 2-pound range are taking anchovies from shore anglers. Larger fish between 5 and 15 pounds have been hitting swimbaits in the evening and overnight. Rainbow trout are biting spinners and trout jigs along the shorelines.

Anglers on Mohave are still seeing striper boils and finding increased hook-ups. Boaters throwing topwater lures are landing fish larger than 5 pounds. Some anglers are also reporting success with shad swimbaits, specifically in the Cottonwood Basin. Anglers at Willow Beach are using spinners and Rooster Tails in the early morning for trout.

Live shad and topwater lures are tempting striped bass in the Boulder Basin. Anglers are reporting an increase in black bass action all over the lake. Jigs and soft plastics fished on Ned rigs are producing the best results. Chicken liver is the go-to bait for catfishing overnight.

With recent trout plants, anglers are having better-than-average success in the mornings. Rooster Tails, olive nymphs, and Woolly Buggers are generally productive. Thin ice is starting to form along the shoreline in the mornings. As the ice thaws throughout the day, the edges remain muddy.

Anglers are experimenting with topwater lures, Rat-L-Traps, and swimbaits in shad patterns. Black bass are attacking soft plastics on Ned rigs in green pumpkin and watermelon red.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife stocked rainbow trout at Cold Creek, Floyd Lamb, Sunset, and Veterans’ Memorial Park ponds. Anglers have had success using rainbow PowerBait and night crawler pieces. The stocked rainbows are averaging about 8 inches in length. Anglers out on warm afternoons are catching bluegill and catfish at Floyd Lamb and Sunset parks using sliced hot dogs and night crawlers.

Striper boils are hit and miss in the Boulder Basin and should keep tapering off. Live shad is the bait of choice, but a variety of shad-patterned lures are landing fish, too. Black bass anglers are having luck with topwater lures and soft plastics fished on dropshots in the Callville Bay area. Catfish in the 12-inch range and larger are taking anchovies and stink baits
