Striper Bite is Just Taking Off

Up on Lake Mohave the striper bite is just taking off with the coves near the power lines starting to produce a few.  Its best to try near the openings and watch for the birds to know where a school might be.  Down river near the dam the Arizona side is also starting to get active.  Here along the Colorado river below the Davis Dam

tTrout Plants Will Begin in November

 The final Catfish stocking for 2018 is scheduled for the week of Oct. 22 and depending on water temperatures, trout plants will begin in November.  Bluegill and bass are starting to slow down with the cooling temperatures, but are most active between 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, taking mealworms and nightcrawlers.  Catfish are taking nightcrawlers, shrimp and hotdogs.  

Boulder Basin Continues to be a Hotspot

 Striper have been out at sunrise and sunset.  Various swimbaits and threadfin shad are bringing in smallmouth and largemouth bass in the evening.  Boulder Basin continues to be a hotspot with anglers trolling through the Boulder Beach area.  Smallmouth bass are still hitting on mostly near rocky shelves and points like the Boulder Islands.

Up on Lake Mohave the Smallmouth Bass are best found along the shelves on your way back into the coves while your Largemouth Bass and catfish like a bit slower water and are back in the shallows.  The striper bite has yet to take off on the lake as of yet.  Hope to have some more news for you soon and we are looking for

Water levels remain low, and aquatic vegetation continues to be a problem for some anglers on Cold Springs and Haymeadow.  Fishing action has been good on Dacey with anglers reporting that trout are hitting “everything thrown at them.”  The fish are ranging in size from 15 to 20 inches.  

Crappie Action Really Picked up this Week

 Crappie action really picked up this week with the fish taking Hares Ear nymphs for fly fishers and night crawlers suspended under a bobber for bait fishers.  The trout action slowed down a bit this week, but with the cooler overnight temperatures it should start picking up soon.

Rainbow trout have been hitting on night crawlers with a bit of mini-marshmallow, as well as chartreuse sparkle PowerBait.  Crappie and bass action has been good with the fish taking spinning lures and small jigs.  

Anglers Continue to Catch a Variety of Fish

 Anglers continue to catch a variety of fish, though fishing has slowed overall.   Rainbow trout are hanging out around docks and in marshy coves.  Rooster Tails and other spinners are generally a good bait choice.  If you are getting bites and no hooks ups, try switching to worms.  For catfish and stripers, anchovies are the go to bait.   With weather and water levels being unpredictable,

 Anglers are catching striped bass with live shad.  The baitfish can be found in the Vegas Wash area.  Work the openings of coves and points for the stripers.  The line sides are also taking anchovies and jigging spoons in about 60-80 feet of water.  Some of the larger fish have been caught on swimbait in trout patterns.

Lake Mohave is not producing much in the way of our stripped bass. Caught and Released Approximately 200 Fish in Just a Few Hours

Despite low water levels at area reservoirs, the action for bass and trout has been very good. Anglers fishing from kayaks and canoes claimed “the bass were hitting like crazy.” The fishermen said they caught and released approximately 200 fish in just a few hours. Stocked rainbows have been hitting spinning lures Haymeadow.

Water levels are a little low, as is usual for late summer, but trout and bass continue to hit well on spinning lures, spoons and flies.  Bait anglers also are doing well with PowerBait or night crawlers. Anglers should soon see some relief from the challenges of aquatic vegetation as it begins to die off with the arrival of cooling overnight temperatures.

Whopper Ploppers are Fooling the Fish.

Catfish are biting outside of Willow Beach and on the south end near Katherine Landing.  The fish are taking chicken liver and anchovies.  Striped bass also are taking anchovies.  Trolling has been especially effective.  Black bass are taking jigs and swimbaits.  Whopper Ploppers are fooling the fish.  Marshy coves are hiding catfish and black bass, while stripers are cruising outside of the coves.

The action is good for both bass and trout.  The trout have been taking a variety of spinning lures and spoons, as well as PowerBait or night crawlers.  With the hunting season open for mourning doves, outdoorsmen can follow up a morning in the field with a day of fishing.
