It got hot. The heat has finally arrived on the Truckee River. 90 this week in Truckee, 100 in Reno. Dog days. Get out early if you want to catch fish. Afternoons will be lousy fishing. The ranch is in much the same shape as the Cali side of the river, though parts of it have some shade from the willows and some extra water that comes in from several springs that cool it down a few degrees it’s still probably time to let those fish rest for a while. The lake level has come down about a foot or so over the last two weeks. The water temperature was in the mid 60's. We fished last weekend from 5:30 to 10am and had on fish on with no other hits.  We tried all four corners of the lake. I talked with another angler that launched and came in at the same time we did. 

As our weather warms up so does the striper bite so to say. That is here along the shores of the Colorado River below the Davis Dam. Our local and visiting anglers are having some success by boat or shore as we have a lot of great spots to throw out a line or your favorite lure. I would recommend a glide or swim bait

Chase Howard checked in with today from fishing on the Carson River for Smallmouth Bass. He successfully catched and released this one which weighed in at 2  pounds 5 ounce. Thanks for sharing Chase!

The ranch is still fishing pretty well, with dry/dropper rigs also being the best way to go lately. As with the California side at some point in the next week or two it will likely be getting too warm to fish and we’ll let you know as soon as that’s the case.  

Rolling through July on the Truckee River. Good solid fishing. Flows have been steady at around 450 cfs here in the Hirsch, higher near stateline, and a bit lower though Reno. We’ve had a few hot days, but still not as bad as last summer with the smoke and heat. Water temps have really not been an issue anywhere on the Ca side yet this summer. Warm

With daytime temps in the 80’s and 90’s for over a week now, the dog days of summer are officially here, and trout fishing will be best reserved for the mornings when water temps are at their lowest. We have been seeing the temps on the Truckee River hitting 66 around noon and this is a good target time to be off the water by

I ventured down to Topaz Lake last week with fellow angler Tom Blotter. We were on the lake by 6:30am and off by 11:30 am. We trolled the east and the north west shores with Rapalas. We caught and released about 18 trout all in the 1.5 to 2.5 lb category.  For those that want to do some bass fishing. The smallmouth were hitting well

Willow Creek provides a great opportunity for anglers and the boat ramp is accessible. With the recent warming trend this is great place for anglers looking to get out and catch trout, bass and crappie this time of year. There is lots of bank access and also a fishing dock. Anglers should concentrate on the areas where there is structure early morning and late afternoon. Fishing

Some largemouth bass news and from up on Lake Mohave. Our local angler Dayton Grant decided to try our lake fishing with some success. Dayton was using one of his favorite spinner baits to target the largemouth bass. This one was 18 and 3/4 inches weighed in at 2.78 pounds. Good solid fishing on the Truckee River Can’t believe, I’d say the weather’s actually been cool. High’s barely getting into the 70’s, and it’s almost mid-July.     Gonna get hot next week, but back to around average temps after mid-week. Cool and foggy here in Hirschdale in the mornings. Weathers been a big factor in the fishing this summer. Cooler weather keeps the water temps down
