Nevada Fish Reports

The Truckee is fishing good but expected to slow with the coming heat. Flows have dropped over the last month and are roughly 200cfs in Reno. Afternoon high temperatures have water temperatures climbing quickly, this makes early and late fishing critical and catch and release fishing very hard to do effectively. Flows on the Carson are already way down but fishing has been good. The river will likely slow with the extreme heat. Spin fisherman using spinners and spoons for trout in deeper pools have caught a few fish recently. Topaz has been fishing well, shore anglers with powerbait and boaters trolling flash rigs are doing the best. Crawlers off the bottom have also been productive early and late in the day. Finding the deeper water has been key. Fishing for trout should remain good and productive through fall.

Spooner has been good from shore and good from float tubes or boats. The vegetation hasn’t taken complete control of the shoreline yet but is expected to with the coming heat. Fly fisherman using callibaetis mayfly emergers late in the day are finding fish on the surface. Damsel nymphs have also been good along the submerged vegetation and weed lines. White bass can be found along most of the sandy beaches throughout the day but the early mornings and late evenings are best. Walleye and smallmouth bass have shown up near rocky shoreline and deep structure along the shore. Ledges are key when looking for the larger white bass. Fishing has been fair at Hinkson for bass. Bass can be found early and late in the day right next to shoreline vegetation and other structure. In addition to the bass, a few trout are still being caught really early and late in the day. Surface flies and plugs on the surface can be good near the shore and along the tulles. Bass fishing has been good. Trout fishing has been fair. Small spinners and worms off the bottom have been good for the bass and an occasional trout.

A few good reports back from Blue. Sporadic midge, damsels, and mayfly hatches have fish on the surface early and late in the day. Leech and damsel patterns have provided anglers with steady catch rates when retrieved or trolled slowly behind a sinking line. Terrestrial dry flies including ants and beetles work well when fish are seen on the surface.   

Fishing for walleye, crappie, channel catfish and wipers will typically pick up when water temperatures get into the mid 50s. Water temperature was 41 on 3/3/2021.  Fishing should get better as we near the end of April.

Slow fishing reports from Knott so far this season. The lake will rebound quickly with adequate water and mild weather.  

Fishing has been excellent. Reports of 10 fish per hour came back from the opener. Spin fishing has been best with a small kastmaster, rooster tails, or powerbait off the bottom. Fishing has been good for smallmouth and white bass using rooster tails, rubber worms, and bright colored jigs. Look for smallmouth and walleye around rocky structure and deeper drop offs. Fly Fisherman are picking up an occasional walleye or bass on chartreuse woolly buggers or clouser minnows fishing rocky points. Carp fishing has been good and can be found in most of the shallow bays.

Walker Lake is currently near 50% of capacity and rising. An increase in the lake level is key to the fishery rebounding.

The water level is down about a foot and will continue to drop through the irrigations season.  This is normal.  Aquatic vegetation is building so shore fishing is becoming more difficult. Best results are from a float tube or small cartop boat.  Expect good fishing for both trout and bass though trout fishing will be slowing with the warmer temperatures.  The usual worms and PowerBait,

The lake has very low water levels and there was a trout die off last summer, so no trout in this lake.   NDOW salvaged approximately 3,000 blue gill and several hundred black bass this past week that were taken to other appropriate waters in the state. Expect this small impoundment to dry up this summer.

No change here as trout fishing in the collection ditch continues to be fair to good depending upon the day and location.  Bass fishing is fair and picking up.  Trout are being caught with leech patterns, balanced leeches, crystal buggers, #14-16 hare’s ears, and #16-18 PT nymphs.  Other flies working include the usual small nymphs, olive soft hackles, red or blue copper Johns, and prince

Algae is in full bloom with the hot sunny weather.  The outflow continues to be about 100 cfs and the water level has dropped a foot in the last 10 days.  Expect poor fishing conditions starting in mid to late July.  Very little change at this time as fishing continues to be good for perch and bass and fair to good for trout. No fish

With surface water temperatures in the high 60’s, fishing for trout has been fair to good and good for bass.  For the bait anglers, worms seem to be working better than PowerBait for trout.  Spin fishermen should be using black spinners with gold blades.  Fly rodders were having good luck with purple, black or olive wooly buggers.  Since Wilson often fishes similar to South Fork,

Fishing is picking up with warming surface water temperatures.  Worms or PowerBait fished off the bottom using a slip sinker has been working.  Bobber fishing will be picking up as the surface water continues to warm.  Good flies for stripping include small leeches, crystal buggers, slumpbusters and wooly buggers.  Nymphs such as PT’s, hares ears, zebra midges, soft hackles and chironomids fished under an indicator

Fishing for bass continues is good while fishing for trout is fair to good for numbers and good for size.  Algae and aquatic plants are coming on strong.  Surface water temperatures are in the low 70’s.  This is about two weeks earlier than normal. The work is complete here and the water level has come back up.  Cold Creek was stocked with approximately 2,400 trout a couple of weeks ago.  Expect it to be fishing similar to South Fork.  Best place for trout will be in the deeper water or where the cool water from the creek flows in.  

Work is being done to put in an improved boat ramp at Comins which is affecting access to the lake.  Do not expect to be able to launch a large boat for the foreseeable future as volunteers and contractors are cutting brush and moving dirt to prepare for the boat ramp.
