Approximately 10 Inches of Safe Ice

Cave Lake is sitting approximately 15 feet below normal water levels and is fluctuating. While there is approximately 10 inches of safe ice, anglers are encouraged to use caution and drill test holes. Now at Minimum Pool Due to Outlet Structure Repair

Cold Creek Reservoir is now at minimum pool due to outlet structure repair being done by Kinross. There is very little water and it is covered in unsafe ice. It’s not worth the trip. Once repairs are complete, pray for the rest of the winter to bring precipitation to help fill the lake.

Still Some Soft Spots on The Lake

Comins has approximately 10 to 12 inches of good ice, though there are soft spots and little bit of open water on the north end. Illipah has approximately 10 inches of ice but the edges and surface are soft. Like Comins, please use caution when getting on and off the ice. ATV’s are not recommended to be on the ice. Fishing has been fair to good. Black or olive jigs tipped with worms jigged slowly have been working as have just hooks with a worm or PowerBait.

Still Some Open Water on The Reservoir

There is some open water on the reservoirs and may provide some opportunity for trout fishing. Most nights are still pushing below freezing, so ice is still found along most shorelines. The ice is too thin to walk on. Where there is open water, a worm below a bobber or a nymph pattern can do the trick.

As of The Weekend The Ice Was Still 6-8 Inches Thick

As of the weekend, the ice was still 6 to 8 inches thick. Trout in the 12- to 18-inch range are hitting PowerBait, night crawlers, and jigs. Anglers Are Reporting That Bigger Fish Are Taking Swimbaits

Stripers as large as 9 pounds are taking anchovies fished from the Colorado River shorelines. Anglers are reporting that bigger fish are taking swimbaits. Rainbow trout are showing a preference for green jigs and night crawlers. Black bass anglers are reporting an increase in activity with warmer daytime temperatures. A few smallies have been caught on green pumpkin worms and jerk baits.

Largemouth Are Becoming More Active

Largemouth bass are becoming more active near structure and vegetation in the Las Vegas Bay area. Anglers are recommending soft plastics in pearl and green pumpkin fished slowly with a finesse presentation. In the Boulder Basin, stripers are taking anchovies from shore anglers in the late afternoon and evening hours. Boaters are having luck when using live bait in 30 to 40 feet of water.

The Striper bite has its rewards with some of our larger fish cruising in. Our local anglers Tony Smith and Chris Duncan brought in a 17.74 pound striper at 36 and 3/8 inches. They were fishing from shore in the Community Park area using anchovies to land this trophy size line side. The Community Park shore line also is home to some great trout fishing.
