Nevada Fish Reports

Flows on the Truckee river have been bouncing around a bit with a series of storms that pushed through the area last week. The increase in flows helped fishing by bringing much needed nutrients and some turbidity to the otherwise crystal clear water. This impoundment is mostly ice covered with no shore access for fishing.  With the colder predicted temperatures expect the lake to freeze over this weekend and with an aerator running to help prevent a winter fish kill, any ice here this winter should be considered unsafe. 

Water levels in the collection ditch are low and clear and fishing for trout is fair to good depending upon the day.  Stormy, windy or cloudy days seem to be the best. Anglers would do well to target areas where springs flow into the ditch or around culverts that create some flow between the ditch and the units.  Very small dark flies fished dry or

The lake level has dropped over the past few weeks and fishing is slow. There was a problem with one of the outflow valves being stuck open, but it is fixed now.  This lake is freezing over as well. 

No recent fishing report from Wilson.  It may still have some open water like SF.  Generally, the same presentations, flies, baits and lures as used at South Fork should also work well here. With this week’s precipitation, expect 4WD conditions to get to Wilson Sink Reservoir.

As of Wednesday, December 4, the lake was ice free with surface water temperatures at the main boat ramp were still hovering around 40 degrees.  Generally, this lake is a week or two or three behind Wildhorse so may have open water for fishing for a while. Due to work that needs to be done on the dam, the water level is down about 12 feet and is 80% covered in very unsafe ice. During construction next summer, Cave Lake State Park will remain open to the public, and visitors can continue to enjoy kayaking, fishing, swimming, and other recreational activities. 

This lake is at about 80% capacity and was 100% open just a week ago and with the stormy weather is probably still open due to winds and these warmer afternoons.

Illipah is completely covered in unsafe ice.  One positive note, it is at capacity which hasn’t happened in the fall in recent memory.  This is great news for this awesome fishery.

Sunny afternoons are slowing down the thickening of ice across the lake. Not many anglers have been venturing out to Echo. Ice is starting to cover the reservoir but is still very thin. Boats are not able to launch due to ice along the shore. For up-to-date ice conditions contact Echo Canyon State Park at 775-962-5103.

Striper action remains consistent below Davis Dam. Anglers have been catching the fish with swimbaits and anchovies. Shore anglers continue to limit out on rainbow trout using PowerBait and spinners.

 Rainbow trout action has been good at Willow Beach. Shore anglers are catching trout between 4 and 6 pounds. Striper action remains moderate. Anglers have reported that stripers are biting on pencil poppers and swimbaits in 8 to 10 feet of water. Black bass and catfish have been biting for shore anglers in coves with drop-offs. 

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has planted rainbow trout twice in the last two weeks at Floyd Lamb, Sunset, Veteran’s Memorial and Lorenzi park ponds. The agency’s plan is to plant fish two to three times each month, as weather and road conditions permit. Catfish and trout both are taking night crawlers. Striper fishing has been good in the Overton Arm and Las Vegas Wash areas. Anglers have been most successful using anchovies and live shad, but stripers are also biting on shad-colored jigs. There are reports of anglers with catches averaging 10 or more striped bass from locations throughout Boulder Basin. The black bass bite is slowing down, but some anglers are still catching the fish
