Fishing has been good first thing in the morning for anglers and the water level, while lower, is still good. Most anglers have been using worms, PowerBait, and spinners. Hares ears, damsel fly nymphs, sheep creek specials, and olive or black wooly buggers are the ticket for fly fishermen. Trout action has been good for rainbow and tiger trout. Brown trout are preparing for spawning season and are hitting sporadically. Bass are still taking lures, but the action has started to slow with the arrival of lower water temperatures. The usual baits have been working well for the trout. Try orange or rainbow PowerBait, or night crawlers with a bit of mini-marshmallow.

Due to an equipment failure in its water delivery system, and the subsequent loss of its rainbow trout stocks, the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery has suspended its recreational fish stocking program, which included weekly fish plants at Willow Beach. Cooler temperatures have improved catch rates for both rainbow and brown trout. The fish have been taking green and rainbow sparkle PowerBait, as well as gold Mepp’s spinners. One lucky angler caught and released a 4 ½-pound largemouth bass while throwing a jig. With fall upon us brown trout will soon start spawning in the stream above the lake and below the dam.
