Fish have been seen dimpling the surface, probably taking midges or mayfly emergers. Fly rodders should use the usual assortment of prince nymphs, PT nymphs, hare’s ears, small buggers, elk hair caddis, Adams and Griffith’s gnats.

Anglers have been having good success fishing for both rainbows and browns at Illipah. Most anglers have been using worms, PowerBait, and spinners. Hares ears, damsel fly nymphs, sheep creek specials, and olive or black wooly buggers are the ticket for fly fishermen.

With the warmer weather, action has slowed some for the trout in the waters. Anglers are having better fishing opportunity in the early mornings or evenings. PowerBait and nightcrawlers with mini-marshmallows have enticed the fish to strike. Anglers have begun to compete with the weed growth around the shoreline.

Bass and crappie are providing anglers with ample action through the reservoir. Nightcrawlers have been a top bait. Connecting the bobber three feet above the worm has had good success. Flyfishers are using wooly buggers in dark colors or tube bait.

The lake is warming up. With warmer weather comes fishing for warm water fish. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are more active amongst points with vegetation reaching out into the water. Some fishermen are having good success from kayaks fishing for striped bass using anchovies or swimbaits.

The striper bites are steady on the lake. Anglers have had success fishing in shallower water for the striped bass in the early morning and then switching to deep diving lures once the heat of the day has warmed the surface waters. Stripers are biting around Willow Beach Marina. Local anglers fished from shore using anchovies. The stripers are getting bigger edging towards eight pounds. We've had several clients on the ranch this week and the ones who were able to report back did pretty well down there. Most of the success was on streamers though we did have 2 clients do well with caddis nymphs and midges. The patterns listed above should also be good for the ranch, for the streamers bright colors are still the best.
