Nevada Fish Reports

Anglers are hauling in trout on PowerBait, worms, spinners and flies. To the west of Ely, Illipah is producing fish and pressure is minimal. Fly-fishermen may want to go with a bead-head Prince Nymph, Hare's Ear or Pheasant Tail.

Pike fishing has turned on. A pair of anglers caught several of the toothy fish over the weekend. Three of those weighed in at 11, 17 and 20 pounds. The latter measured more than 40 inches long. Fishing has been good for largemouth bass, crappie and rainbow trout. Anglers have been finding the bass and crappie in the narrows and along structures. Both fish will take small jigs and Gitzits. Plastics are another option for the bass. Rainbows favor PowerBait, flies and hardware. Warming temperatures will push the trout to deeper water.

As a rule, striper fishing remains sluggish, but some anglers have been finding some success while trolling anchovies along the cliffs across from Cottonwood Cove and the area near 45 Mile. This spring has been a good one for both smallmouth and largemouth bass. Smallies were once caught only in the Overton arm, but that has since changed as the fish have made their way into the Boulder Basin as well. The key with both fish is structure and a forage base. ruckee river fishing has been slow to good. Fly anglers have been successful using Stone Flies, bead head prince nymphs and hares ears. Fish the bottom bounce. Bait fisherman try bouncing eggs. The flow is 635 cfs as 5/1/07.

Good fishing for Trollers and bank fisherman. Trollers are using Repala's in brown and silver colors. Also some are catching trolling a Worm Harness. Bank fishermen have been successful using powerbait in orange color.

Jim French, regional fisheries biologist, reports below the dam in the outlet fishing has been good. Try using white crappie jigs white or yellow 1/8 oz.

After a couple days of rain and snow the flows are up to the mid 600 cfs level. The water remains clear and fish able but be careful wading. Nymphing with Golden Stones with a Baetis dropper. Cold weather has the flows down to 250 cfs. Great flows for fishing but the approaching warm weather should have the flows climbing again by the end of the week. South Shore: Gene St. Denis: I've been fishing at Camp Richardson and Ski Run Shelf. Trolling at 45-60 feet at Camp Rich and then going deeper to 150-240 at Ski Run, with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows. The Macks have been running up to 5-6 pounds.

East Shore: Gene St. Denis: Toplining Rapala. Rebel or A/C lures in 15-25 feet of water for rainbows, Mackinaw and browns at Deadman's Point, Logal Shoals and Sand Harbor.

Andy at the Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks at 358-6113: It is doing good with Nymphs. One fly fisherman caught a 25-incher on a Midge. I fished there Saturday, caught and released two, ate lunch and went back to work.

Carla Molino of the Pyramid Lake Store at (775) 476-0555: When the wind did not blow, the fishing was very good. The fly fishermen were doing well with lots of "turn backs" in the 8-10 pound class.
