Fish Reports

Anglers are finding some success at the upper marsh for panfish and catfish. Mealworms or night crawlers below a bobber will catch fish.

Catfish have been taking chicken livers and anchovies in and around Katherine Landing while anglers have been catching striped bass and black bass outside of Cottonwood Cove. Coves are the place to be for early morning fishing. Imitation rainbow trout or threadfin shad baits are fooling the fish.

Anglers have found good action right after sunrise. Live threadfin shad can be found outside Government Wash, with stripers lurking nearby. Anchovies have been the most preferred bait, but some fishermen are using imitation shad lures as well. Both catfish and stripers are taking the imitations. Catfish have been found around the Hemenway fishing pier and black bass in shoreline vegetation near Callville Bay.

The Truckee River is still about the same as last post. Flows are about 225 cubes here in the Hirsch and bit higher down into Nevada. Winter fishing folks. Trouts have moved into slower deeper water. Washoe Lake dried up in 2004 and it has been difficult to recover the fishery as drought continues to haunt western Nevada. It is very low again this year. Fishing is expected to be poor.

The Truckee's current flow in Reno is 549 cfs. This year’s river flows are some of the best we’ve seen in the last 4 years. We’ve been getting some great reports from anglers that know how to fish the Truckee. Fish exceeding the 20 inch mark are not that uncommon. East Fork of the Carson River’s current flow is 112 cfs near Gardnerville. Fishing will pick up as the flows stabilize and the NDOW hatchery truck will be visiting soon which should make a recipe for success.

As the temperature of fall start to drop the weed bed around Spooner Lake will recede and the fishing will get better. A watercraft such as a float tube or kayak is the key to unlocking this lake’s hold on fishing. Fly anglers have had luck using black, brown, and green wooly buggers. Fishing at Lahontan has turned off lately because of the low water levels. Water levels are hovering around 36,000 acre feet. The best fishing has been by the dam where the Truckee canal dumps in. All state parks boat launches are closed and beach launching is difficult due to muddy banks.

Bilk Creek Reservoir: Fishing has been good for trout. Trout were stocked in early October. Bass fishing has been fair and will slow down at the temperatures cool. Anglers in float tubes casting top water poppers at the bass will catch fish. Trout fishing should remain good until ice over. Chimney Reservoir: Fishing has been slow to fair. The boat launches are closed due to low water levels. Shore launching is risky and is done at your own risk. The water levels continue to drop. Fishing has been slow. Anglers have reported fair evening and night fishing for catfish with your normal catfish baits. The fish truck dropped 500 rainbows on October 11.

No new updates. No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lakes since 2009. Launching is not possible right now.

The lake level is currently 635 feet above msl. This elevation represents a drop of 7 feet from last week’s report so be very careful of rocks just under the surface. The fishing dock at Katherine's Landing produced some nice fish. The striper bite has returned according to reports. Down deep by the dam and above the power lines are the hottest spots.

Trout stocking has begun and the latest stocking was last week, the week of Nov. 6. The best bait is reported to be yellow and orange power bait and of course night crawlers. The current elevation is 1078.6 feet above msl. which is an increase of almost 2 feet in elevation from last week. The National Park Service has been working to improve conditions at South Cove launch ramp, but 4x4 vehicles are recommended for launching/retrieving boats. Be sure to check out launch ramp area prior to launching. Be careful boating because of low water level,
