Fish Reports

With the shad moving in striper fishing is improving. Anglers have had success netting shad along the shore line at 33 Hole and in Vegas Wash. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass remains, but most have already left their beds and are searching for food. Texas rigs and jerk baits have proven successful.

Best fishing is when there is chop on the water and the Lohanton’s are close to shore where they can be reached with a shooting head from a ladder. Stripping a pyramid bugger with a tadpole or snail dropper. A strip and pause will yo-yo action on the snail initiates a strike. This lake has been stocked and fishing should be good here. Water level is about a foot from spilling, so while it is a bit low, this small impoundment is in better shape than many. The road is closed and the lake is completely iced over. No more reports until about mid or late May when NDOT generally opens the road to this high mountain lake.

Fishing has been good for 8 to 10 inch fish using baits as well as small spinners and flies. Trout are often seen shoaling in the shallows and sight fishing can be fun. Fishing has been good for 14 to 16 inch fish. Float tubers seem to be having the best luck in the south 1/3 of the lake using wooly buggers, leech patterns, chironomids and hare's ears.

Trout have been taking an assortment of lures and baits this past week. Minnow imitations and night crawlers with a piece of mini-marshmallow have been working well. Most trout are in the 11- to 13-inch range. Largemouth bass have really picked up and lures in chartreuse or green and white have been working best.

Bass and crappie have been taking small jigs and Gitzits. Trout measuring in the 11- to 12-inch class have been taking PowerBait, night crawlers, small spinners and little Rapalas.

Striper action remains sluggish though catfish have been taking night crawlers and cut anchovies. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are taking plastics fished slowly through grass beds and other submerged vegetation. Anglers have also had some success using spinnerbaits. NDOW stocked catfish this week at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, Sunset Park and Floyd Lamb Park. With water temperatures warming anglers should see improved action for largemouth bass and sunfish; both will usually take night crawlers or meal worms. Anglers are still catching rainbow trout left over from winter stocking activities, but that will slow down as the water gets warmer.

Anglers have been finding success using both threadfin and gizzard shad in the Vegas Wash area as live bait. Low water has left vegetation exposed, which is making things difficult for those throwing cast nets.
