Fish Reports

Flows are up on the Truckee, but the hatches are still good and so is the fishing

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
You would think after an unusually light winter snowpack, the water master would be holding back a little water. A week ago that was the case but in the last 4-5 days flows have increased on the Truckee. While the river is fishable from Tahoe City through Reno it is just a little strange to see so much water being shifted to lower

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Fish have moved to deeper water. Jig bite has been good for mackinaw weighing three to six pounds. Some days are better than others. It’s no sure thing. Last brown trout was caught last Friday. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552, Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Flows on the Truckee are above 335 CFS near the town of Truckee and 746+ CFS below Boca Bridge.  June 20, 2012 Open above the 267 Bridge.  There is a lot of water but the caddis and sally hatches in the evenings should bring fish to the surface in the slower sections. Year round section below 267.    The fishing became much more challenging with the release of

The flows are up on the Truckee & we have to work a little harder for those trout

by MATT KOLES
It's rafting season near Tahoe City and flows are up to accommodate the almighty rafting dollar. Bummer, as they have water coming out of Boca as well. I was just settling in for an easy summer of guiding, looks like I'll be working for them trouts a little harder than usual. Flows in Truckee are about 350, Hirschdale 750, and around Reno, near 600. Water

Most of the reports from the ranch have been pretty good this week also.

by JIM REID
It seems that dry/dropper rigs and streamers have been doing the best. Zuddlers, zonkers and double bunnies have been good streamer patterns, in bright colors like yellow and white. Chubby Chernobyls or stimulators with a PT or zebra dropper have been doing well also.

Timing is important when deciding to fish the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
I've been seeing a lot of rods getting bent, doubled over to the cork bent lately on the Truckee. These Truckee River fish pull hard. We were tearing them up on the dry dropper rigs, riding the gravy train until they bumped the flows up again. 750 cubes and above through the Hirsch and down below. Fish the mid sections of river, or through town

Fish are moving deeper. Macks are 40 to 50 feet deep in the morning but some are down as deep as 190 to 200 feet. Jigging for mackinaw is starting to become more succesful. The Keys and Emerald Bay kick out a few fish here and there. Mike Nielsen took a 13 pounder from the South Shore. Rainbows are taking trolled baits off downriggers. Gene

There’s a green drake hatch below the Boca outlet. It happens the last hour of the evening. Find deep pockets where big fish are coming up to feed. Caddis patterns will work during the day. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Boaters are getting limits from deep water. Trollers start on the southeast side of the lake 25 feet deep with Rapalas, nightcrawler/flashers or black/silver or black/gold Needlefish. Trout weigh better than a pound. Recreational boat traffic is making it more difficult. Shore fishermen are struggling. (775) 266-3550

Whenis the last time you caught a Brown like this?

by MATT KOLES
It's been a few years since I've been able to effectively fish all my old slots and seams here on the Cali side. The water over the past couple springs has just been so dam high. The Nevada side is usually a hundred or so cfs lower, which makes it easier to fish. Sure we caught our fair share of fish up here, but I

It's a smorgasborg of bugs on the Truckee River, a virtual Buffet for trout

by MATT KOLES
It's a smorgasbord of bugs up here on the Truckee River. Flows are a perfect 520 coming out of Boca. The upper river just got some water in it today with releases out of Tahoe. Green Drakes are finally out in good numbers, pmds, caddis, yellow stones, and now some goldens. Looks like a Hometown Buffet on a Friday night. Find out what fish are

Sceirine Ranch is fishing well especially with streamers

by JIM REID
The Ranch is fishing well also, streamers have been very good down there this past week. Zuddlers, moal leeches and sculpzillas have been good in bright colors like whites and yellows. Also nymphs like princes, dark lords and pheasant tails have been doing well in addition to the flies mentioned. above.

Gilligan sneaks in a session for himself

by MATT KOLES
I often get asked if I get out to fish for myself much. This time of year, not really, I'm busy guiding. I get my time in, trust me. I go out to check the river often, but it's short fishing stints. Late fall and winter are usually when I get most of my fishing time in. I'm on the water every day and I

Mackinaw from three to eight pounds are being pulled from 40 to 200 feet deep. Browns are found 25 to 35 feet deep and some even deeper. Recent derby had a 26 pound mackinaw as a winner. Runner-up was 18.8 pound mack. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552, Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Truckee River Fish Report

There are march browns, black ants to imitate for fly fishers. Flows are such that access is good and wadeable. (530) 587-4844

Reports from Pyramid Lake (NV) have been pretty good despite that fact that fishing will close soon

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
There are still a few die hards fishing Pyramid. Reports have actually been pretty good. The cooler weather has kept the water in pretty good shape and there are still some fish cruising the shallows. 5-20 fish days are common right now. South end beaches like Wino, Sand hole and Blockhouse are doing well Beaches further North like the North Nets Spider Point and Warrior.

The dry fly fishing could hardly be better on the Truckee River

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The water has dropped to perfect fishing levels this past week. The weather has been tough for the last few days but the forecast is for clear and sunny through the next week. Bugs are hatching (especially in the evenings) and the fishing is great. Caddis, Little Yellow Stones, Baetis and the beginnings of the green drake hatch in the canyon section have

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Very few have braved the wind but those who have were rewarded with trout to three pounds. Use Rapalas 25 feet below the surface. A handful of three pound bass have been caught in recent days. (775) 266-3550

The flows on the Truckee have dropped below 400 cfs & the fish are in their normal haunts

by MATT KOLES
I guess I was wrong about the weather, but hey, it's still spring in the mountains and anything can happen. I was really hoping for a biblical hatch of g-drakes, but instead the God's reigned down pmds for all those that were on the water the last couple days. Pmds seem to be the main dish on the Truckee River menu, hopefully, caddis, drakes and

The fishing has been good on the Truckee and should stay that way

by MATT KOLES
Rain showers are in the forecast this week, and with dropping flows daily, the bugs will pop my friends. We should see some good hatches of drakes, pmds, caddis, and little yellow stones this week, throughout the whole Truckee River system. The fishing has been good, and should continue to stay good. There is no other place I'd rather be than on the Truckee
