In the spring, trout fishing — for both boat and shore anglers — is usually best in shallow to midwater depths. For shore anglers, try fishing trout dough bait or a worm off the bottom in shallow water. Boat anglers can do well trolling shallow- to medium-diving crankbaits, pop gear and a worm, or a squid-and-dodger combination. As the water warms, smallmouth bass fishing will pick up along shallow rocky areas, especially in the afternoon when the water has had a chance to warm up close to shore. Smallmouth bass can be caught during these times with suspending crankbaits, jerkbaits, sinking flies, plastics (wacky rig, Texas rig and Carolina rig) and even a jig tipped with a worm under a bobber. Try casting both parallel to shore and perpendicular to shore.
