Western Nevada Fish Reports

Oh My!

by MATT KOLES
Big water still. Flows should probably get more manageable, 2’nd week of July on the Truckee River. For now, clarity is good, fish have adapted to the high flows and they are fat and healthy. Soon the real lower stuff will open up and it will be lights out. Like Floriston on down through Nevada. Lots of those fish haven’t seen a fly since

Spooner Lake Tiger Trout

by CHAD WOODS
Today I met up with some good friends at Spooner Lake for some trout fishing with the kids.  It was beautiful weather with a light breeze.  It was great to see Captain Justin Fleck on land.  Justin was accompanied by his wife Teresa and of course Stashia and Justin Jr.  We also had Dave Geis and his son Ben. We arrived around 1 PM and the

The Truckee River – The Blue Ribbon of the Northern Sierra

by JON BAIOCCHI
Some of my fondest memories growing up were fly fishing the Truckee River in the mid 1970’s with my dad. Back then it was a rarity to see someone using a fly rod while plying the river’s currents, and when we did see such a person, my dad would make it a point to introduce himself and talk about fly fishing with a complete stranger.

Truckee River Update

by MATT KOLES
Busy busy Memorial Day weekend. Little late on the report, but that’s what happens. Guiding, watching twins, and repairing the deck keeps a man busy. Anyways the Truckee River is still high, but fishing very very well. In fact we have had some very unusual numbers days, meaning quantity and quality. Quantity is rare, but quality ain’t on this river. When you hook 10-15 fish

Flows Dropping

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
With the current flows being high one will still be fishing the softer water closer to the bank, with flow to it, as trout will not be fighting the higher flows found in the middle of the river. Trout this time of year, and in the situation we’re in, can be found in some shallow water just to avoid the flow and use as little

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by DOUG BUSEY
Fishing has been very good on the north end of the lake. The Tahoe shelf to Carnelian Bay right at the drop off. Use a down rigger and get right on the bottom. Fish with a dodger and a minnow or a Rapala or an d-AC plug. You can also use a set of flashers with a No. 3 rainbow or brown patterned Rapala 3

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by DOUG BUSEY
The lake level has been fluctuating up and down for the couple weeks. the early morning bite has been fair. As the sun rises, boat anglers need to go deeper. Best shore action has been on the California side or the farthest south area on the Nevada side. Be mindful this weekend as there will be anglers as well as skiers on the lake. If

Big flows still on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
We’re right around 3,800-4000 k every day here in the Hirsch. Better than 5,500 k, which it was just recently. 4,000 k opens up a little more water, but not much. Clarity is good and all, but the water is still very high. The river really hasn’t come up with the warm weather. We’ve been catching fish. In fact some days it’s been going off. Instead

Davis Creek Pond Trout Update

by CHAD WOODS
Today I decided to take the kids to the local ponds and try to catch some of the Rainbow Trout that were recently planted. We made a full lap around the pond looking for biting fish. As we made our lap we asked people if they had been catching. The fish were not biting yet. I did find one guy who

Wilson Common Trout Report

by CHAD WOODS
We headed over to Wilson Common today to try and catch some Rainbow Trout that had been recently stocked. We did see jumpers. The wind had picked up so the conditions were not optimal. I did speak to a gentleman who was fly fishing. He managed to catch a couple trout that he released back into the pond. We made a full lap around the

Still big flows on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Much better than last week though. 3,900 cubes here in the Hirsch. All last week we were about 5,400 k. So big big difference. Water has dropped about a foot and a half. That drops us below flood stage, but still big water. Normal flows behind the house are like 350-650 cfs. Of course, spring brings big flows, but man, this spring is something else. We’ve

Tahoe Brown Trout Report

by MIKE NIELSEN
Fishing Guide Mike Nielsen checked in this afternoon with a fishing update from Lake Tahoe. Today we had some nice browns and we kept two for the dinner table.

Truckee River Fish Report

Still big pumping flows on the Truckee River. Flows have dropped a bit from last week, but the river is still above flood stage. About 4,500 cfs today in the Hirsch. Most of last week it was about 5,500 cfs. Minor flood stage is 4,000 cfs here. Highs were in the 70’s last week, snowing now as I write this. I am catching fish. I have my

Pyrmaid Lake Fish Report

by DOUG BUSEY
The fishing has been slow to fair. Last weekend Jerry and Jennifer Dow from Carson City were fishing for big Cutthroat trout by Windless bay. As the story was told to me by Jerry, Jennifer was throwing torpedo spoon and had a good bite. Jerry instructed her to play the spoon a little the fish may come back and hit it again, as well

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by DOUG BUSEY
The lake level is starting to come back up a few feet over the last week. Fishing has been fair for shore and boat anglers. Green or rainbow Powerbait has been most productive from shore. Anglers trolling Rapala's early or late evenings have picked up a few in close to the shore area. During the afternoons most fish have been caught in

Truckee River Update

Big pumping flows. Lots of water coming out of Lake Tahoe right now into the Truckee River. 2000 k coming out of the lake. Lots of water coming out of everything else too. What you have is about 5,400 cfs here in the Hirsch. Much higher and more dirty down below. Word is that peak flows will happen on May 17th, but I think

Lake Tahoe Fishing Report

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Lake Tahoe has benefitted from a historic winter and is near full for the first time in a decade. Anglers have been reporting good success catching Mackinaw in the 3-5 pound range from boats concentrating in the 100 – 300 feet with white dodgers and minnows. Washoe Lake Fishing Report

Washoe Lake has benefitted from the historic winter of 2016-2017 and has reached levels not seen in over a decade. Fishing will be very difficult due to the lake being dry for several years. The lake is scheduled to receive channel catfish in 2017 and the process to rebuild the fishery has begun. Lucky anglers may have success on white bass or
