Western Nevada Fish Reports

The best time to fish the Truckee River is in the morning until around noon

by RENO FLY FISHING OUTFITTERS
The water conditions on the Truckee in California continue to be really good. Most of the water in the system is being released from Lake Tahoe right now and there is a good flow from Tahoe City down to the State line. The river is starting to get on the low side in Nevada which is pretty bad timing with the record heat we are

The Truckee River has been "Kickin' them out"

by MATT KOLES
Crazy weather this week up here on the Truckee River in Truckee-Reno-Tahoe. Cold and rain earlier in the week, record temps this weekend. I was mostly on the LT all week dry fly fishing with guests, fun stuff, but the real deal is the Truckee River. The river, as we like to say, has been kicking them out. All the bugs are out, caddis, pmds,

Guide Mike Nielsen has been fishing for the Tahoe grand slam – macks, rainbows, browns and kokanee. Kokes and macks are easiest to come by. Browns and rainbows are hit-and-miss. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Sport Fishing (530) 544-6552, Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Recreational boating is taking over and fishing has taken a backseat. Lake is 50% of capacity and dropping. The few anglers getting out can get limits of trout trolling 20 feet deep with flashers/nightcrawlers. Shoreline anglers get a trout here and there. Power Bait (rainbow) work best. Bass have left their beds and action is spotty. Crankbaits are the most commonly used lures. Topaz Landing

Cold Fronts in Summer at Truckee can mean very good fishing, so grab your pole & get out

by MATT KOLES
A cold front in summer? We do get them occasionally in Northern California, though not often. Usually from May-October a strong high pressure ridge keeps storms and the jet stream away from Nor Cal and the Sierra Nevada. Much different than say the Rockies that can tap into the moisture form the Pacific Northwest. Sure we get our share of afternoon thunderstorms, but not a

Anglers have a chance at rainbows, browns, kokanee and mackinaw. Toplining for rainbows and browns is getting tougher but kokanee to 14 inches are providing limit action. Kokes are 30 to 50 feet deep along the west and south shores. Macks are moving so bite has been inconsistent. Trolling has brought most of the action. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Hit pockets while high sticking nymphs. Have to get the fly to the bottom where the fish are sitting. Wind has made dry fly hatches problematic. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Fly fishing from shore at Pyramid Lake is getting tough, but fishing from boats has been awesome

by RENO FLY FISHING OUTFITTERS
After June 11th, Pyramid is starts to take on its summer form. We have has some really warm weather and the water in the shallows is heating up. Fly fishing from shore is starting to get pretty tough. There are some good days out there but for the most part the fish have moved out into deeper water. The boaters fishing in 30-60 feet of

After a lull fishing on the Truckee is coming on, the hatches are better & nymphing is the way to go

by RENO FLY FISHING OUTFITTERS
The Truckee in California is starting to pick up again after a little lull, in the action from the hot weather we had last week. The Caddis hatch is still lower on the river but it is making its way toward the Town of Truckee daily. There have also been some Green Drakes hatching in the canyon section. The stretch between Tahoe City and Prosser

"Gilligan's" client catches a really nice Brown on the Truckee, & afterward they enjoy a brew

by MATT KOLES
We got a little lucky yesterday and landed this big brown trout. Actually, it was in a slot that I'd hooked big fish before. Adam who is a great angler stuck this baby and off it went. We landed it about 200 yards downstream through fast water. When I say we, I mean it took both of us, angler and guide, working together to put

Things are cranking here on the Truckee River in Reno, Tahoe, Truckee

by MATT KOLES
What I thought was going to be a summer long heat wave has let up and we are back in the low 70's once again in the Hirsch. Careful breathing in that cool mountain air because you could inhale a mouthful of caddis. We have been hammering them on the pupa lately, and the G-6 reigns supreme. A big stone and a G-6 ,

Lake trout bite is tough. Limits are possible but food is so plentiful anglers have to put in time. Guide Mike Nielsen is toppling for browns and getting daily action as well as mack limits. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Action is uneven. The regulated section has big water below Boca. There are lots of caddis and green drakes in the evening. Hatches have been sporadic. Dry fly action is better above Boca. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Shore anglers are getting some action along the south shoreline. No limits but some get two to three fish. Trollers put nightcrawlers and flashers down 20 feet for limits of trout. Bass are spawning. Smallmouth are near the north shore. Largemouth are near the southwest shore. Topaz Landing (775) 266-3550

There is an explosion of bugs on the Truckee River -- things have definately heated up

by MATT KOLES
Things have heated up here on the Truckee River in Reno-Truckee-Tahoe. The fishing has been very good, morning, to mid-mornings. They are munching on everything. It's a smorgasbord of bug activity. Pmd's, green drakes, caddis, golden stones. Everything is out flying around. Evenings, the big caddis hatches are out and if you're lucky you will run into a nice green drake hatch. Fish the above

Things are perfect here on the beautiful Truckee River both in California and Nevada.

Things are perfect here on the beautiful Truckee River both in California and Nevada. Perfect weather+perfect flows+bugs=great fishing. Of course you still have to work for them here, but as far as the Truckee goes, it probably don't get much better. Bugs out galore. I've been banging fish out mostly on pmd nymphs, and big stones. Still waiting on the epic caddis hatches, but man

Mackinaw limits are achieved jigging from 90 feet to 120. Keep moving until you find the schools. Three and 4 oz Williamson jigs tipped with a minnow can get action. Toplining action is decent for browns in the three pound range. Kokanee from 12 to 16 inches are starting to show up. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

The fishing on the Truckee has been very good

by MATT KOLES
It's good out there on the Truckee River. We have had a great week with a lot of bent rods. Flows have dropped to about a normal usual late July average, and it's only the beginning of summer. That means fishing everywhere has opened up for the wade angler. Pretty much everything is pop'n right now. Pmds, green drakes, caddis, yellow stones, golden stones, you

Guide Mike Nielsen has been getting limits of macks, a good showing of browns and the occasional rainbow trolling the west side of the lake. Kokanee action should start happening in the near future.   Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593
