Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
There was more water skiing than fishing over the weekend. Smallmouth bass to 2-1/2 pounds are being caught near the east bank and the county park. Trout bite remains slow from shore.  Topaz Landing (775) 266-3550

The Truckee River is really fishing well right now

by MATT KOLES
Thank you if you attended my spring clinics this weekend. I had a great time teaching them. Everyone learned a few things, (I hope), and everyone hooked fish. We nymphed with a few different rigs, fished some dry dropper setups, and did some streamer fishing. The dry fly fishing was surprisingly good as well. I'm cranking right into summer mode now on the Truckee River.

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report, May 23, 2013

I'll give you guys a California side report this week because that's where I've been fishing. I'm sure the Nevada side is fishing well, but I haven't been on it in about ten days or so. The booze parade of inner tubers will be out this weekend through Reno, if you go, go early, or go East of Reno. It'll be a big weekend

A cold spell is delaying bug hatches. Streamers are a good bet to attract larger browns. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Bass bite is improving in the south end of the lake. Average smallmouth is 2-1/2 pounds but a five pound largemouth was caught last week. Trout anglers do best trolling 15 feet deep in the middle of the lake. Shore fisherman are having a tough time. Topaz Landing (775) 266-3550

Unlike last week, things are changing daily on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
LT the other day, but none today. Maybe they'll kick off strong, maybe they won't. They like a solid week of warm weather, rain today, we'll see what happens. Everything else is on the menu, princes, copper johns, hare's ears, and rubberleggs. Of course the real bugs are out too, or about to come out. As you can see I like fishing attractors this time

Guide Mike Nielsen is getting limits of lakers on both a.m. and p.m. trips. Rainbows and browns are coming from 45 feet of water with spoons and Stickbaits. The jig bite for lakers has been in 165 to 225 feet with good action on 3 to 5 pound macks.  Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Best fishing is when there is chop on the water and the Lohanton’s are close to shore where they can be reached with a shooting head from a ladder. Stripping a pyramid bugger with a tadpole or snail dropper. A strip and pause will yo-yo action on the snail initiates a strike. Good reports around Wino and Pelican where anglers are hooking the cutts. Use

Shoreline anglers struggle to get trout. Boaters do best trolling with flashers/nightcrawlers. Bass bite is picking up. A five pound largemouth was caught Tuesday. Smallmouth and largemouth also are active in the south end. Look for rocky areas. Topaz Landing (775) 266-3550

Truckee River fishing has been up & down -- like you've never heard that before

by MATT KOLES
Not a whole lot has changed since the last report on the Truckee River. We've had a few good days of rain this week, but the river has settled down to it's below normal spring time flows. Clarity is not an issue unless you travel East of Reno. 250 cubes below Truckee, 700 cubes in the Hirsh, a little higher through the canyons, and about

Indicator fishing has been strong with rumor of a 20 pound fish on Chironomids.  Fish early and late or on windy days for best success. If you have been waiting to catch your 10# plus, this is the year to spend the time out there.  As we get into the month of May the fish are starting to bunch up for the spawn and the

Trout fishing has been slow for shore anglers, but good for boaters who can get to the deeper water. Most trollers get limits trolling 12 to 15 feet deep with flashers and nightcrawlers. Trout average 1-1/2 pounds. Topaz Landing (775) 266-3550

Fishing on the Truckee has been slow & good all at the same time

by MATT KOLES
Fishing has been up and down this week, seems like it always is in spring. Sadly, spring flows on the Truckee River looks like they have crested, good news for us now, could be bad news for us later. On a normal year the Truckee would be pretty much un-fishable with this hot weather we've had, now the whole thing is fishing even through Nevada.

20 Pounds? Not Too Bad, for an Extinct Fish

by SPORTFISHINGREPORT.COM STAFF
By NATE SCHWEBER Published: April 23, 2013 PYRAMID LAKE, Nev. -- For most fishermen a 20-pound trout is a trophy, but for Paiute tribe members and fish biologists here the one Matt Ceccarelli caught was a victory. That Lahontan cutthroat trout he caught last year, a remnant of a strain that is possibly the largest native trout in North America, is the first confirmed catch of a fish
