Winter Clinics January 19th & 20th

by MATT KOLES
This is your chance to hang out and get schooled up by yours truly on some winter fishing tactics. You will see the set-up I am using right now; rods, lines, leaders, and how I approach the river in the winter. The main points we will cover are type of water to fish, flies, and rig setup. Classes will be a bit smaller than my

Situation averted

Flood stage never happened. The monsoons came and went. If we'd had more snow up top and it had rained like it did, things would be different. I know a lot of water pushed up through town, but for Hirschdale and below, 2000 cfs is nothing. That could be typical spring flow for us. Right now the Truckee River is dropping. There's about 3

The Winter stroms have affected the flows of the Truckee but the river adjusts well

by MATT KOLES
It's going to get wet. We have some strong Pacific storms that are hitting Nor Cal starting today into the weekend. Snow levels will be high which means rain for anything under around 7500-8500 feet. With all this rain the Truckee River should be pumping by this weekend and probably every other river in Nor Cal. Good news is that the Truckee clears fairly

Wind makes conditions unfishable some days. Fluctuating temperatures prevents steady action for toplining trout or trolling/jigging for mackinaw. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552, Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Water temperature is 56 degrees and fishing remains good for boats, so-so from shore. However, pressure has been light because of poor weather. A 24 pound, 36-inch trout was caught-and-released Wednesday. Picture is coming. It is believed to be the biggest cutthroat caught in at least five years. (775) 476-0400

Special Regulation section is fishing well. Flows are good up and down the stretch. Flows are below 400 cfs so access is good. Small mayflies are the way to go.  Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

How's the weather on the Truckee, stick around & it will chnge -- so will the fishing

by MATT KOLES
Not a bad week to get out and do some fishing. Cloud cover and warmer than normal storms have kept temps above average for this time of year. Flows are up a bit from this last weekend storms on the Truckee River through California and Nevada, and clarity is not an issue. All the usual winter suspects should catch fish. Worms, eggs, stones, baetis,

The winter storms definitely affect Truckee fishing

by MATT KOLES
We are beginning to see the Jet Stream move south over California and a first of Pacific storms are rolling in. On an average winter, Tahoe-Truckee gets a lot of snow. On average more snow than anywhere in the lower 48, except Mt. Baker Wa. We also get a lot of rain being so close to the Pacific. If you're a fly angler on the

Mackinaw fishing is excellent off the north shore, particularly Cal-Neva Point and Dollar Point. Macks are in 100 to 200 feet deep. Dodgers and minnows, Flatfish and kokanee-patterned Trophy Sticks get macks in the two to six pound range. There are larger fish near the shelves. Toplining for rainbows and browns is starting to pick up. Best results are off Eagle Flat, Cascade Point. There

Fall turns to Winter on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
It got dam cold here the last few days. The other day, zero for a morning low here in the Hirsch, 25 for a high. I've been down lower on the river and I can tell you it was cold down there too. The cold snap forced water temps to plummet, and honestly the last two days were tough. We stuck a few, but not

The Blockhouse has been a hot spot. A couple of 10 pounders were caught from the area last week. Water temperature is 59 and going down. Thermocline is moving up and trout are closer to the top. (775) 476-0400

The fly fishing, special regulation area is fair. Indicator nymphing with stone flies and small, dark nymphs works well. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Fall is one of the best times on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
We had a pretty awesome last half of the season here on the Truckee River. Another Indian Summer. Mild temps and clear sunny days, but that's over. We're shifting into winter here in the mountains. The stove is going every night and soon all day she'll be burning. That's fine, we need snow, and the Truckee will continue to fish good all winter, at least

As the seasons change so does the fishing on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
In Cali on the Truckee River it is cold in the mornings. Mid-twenties with a thick fog bank. The fog usually burns off around lunch time. Water temps are getting cold, 49.5 here in the Hirsch at noon. Whats that mean? Means fish are not sucked down in fast oxygenated water like they were in summer. They're back in the softer stuff, in runs and
