Western Nevada Fish Reports

Fly fishing on the Truckee River has been pretty good

by MATT KOLES
So far March has been about the coldest month of this Winter. Good snows and more on the way. Pretty stoked for the precip.  Not a great Winter, but not bad either. If we can finish with 90% of average ,that'd be great. Winter is not over, we'll see.  Fly fishing on the Truckee River has been pretty good. I really like March. April and early May

Midges are fishing the best right now by far

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Yet another great week during the best month of what is considered the best year of recent memory. Do we need to say anymore? If you aren’t fishing out here right now, you should be! With a week of stormy days, the bite should be excellent throughout most of the week. Midges are fishing the best right now by far. We have been fishing more 2

Truckee River Fishing Report

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
While we expect the flows to remain  the same after this incoming storm, we do anticipate the temps to continue to drop with nighttime temps into the teens later this week. The drop in water temperature will make afternoons the best time to get on the water. We are still waiting on the Skwalas to really start up. While nymphing them has been putting some

The fishing continues to be solid at the salty pond

by THE FLY SHOP
The fishing continues to be solid at the salty pond, with good numbers of fish cruising the shorelines. Pick your favorite beach and be ready for an opportunity at a high-teen to 20lber. Cold weather with lows in the mid 20's and highs up near 40 as expected. There have been significantly more big fish caught this season than last. Indicator nymphing with Balanced Leeches

What a difference a storm system makes

What a difference a storm system makes. A bit of cloud cover and wind make a world of difference.

It pays off when you come out for a few days

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
It pays off when you come out for a few days. The first two days we had bluebird weather in the 60s. We caught fish but it was slow. Day 3 the lake showed off a bit in the weather and the fish came out to play.

False Spring, now Winter is back at least for awhile on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
False Spring, now Winter is back at least for awhile on the Truckee River.  Good, because we need 2-3 big storm cycles this month. Then I think we'll be set up water wise pretty well for Summer. Meteorological Spring is here. This is a fun time on the Truckee River. I always like Spring as the whole river fishes well. We always get our biggest fish in

The lake continues to fish well this week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Whenever we think to ourselves “It can’t stay this good all season”, we are happily proven wrong. The lake continues to fish well this week, at least on the overcast and stormy days. When the fish begin to come in shallow and school up in their pre-spawn behavior, the storm systems will be far less important, and the fishing will be good most days. Typically, these

We are currently seeing very good fishing conditions on the river

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
We are currently seeing very good fishing conditions on the river. Flows are right around, or slightly above average for this time of year and the water is holding just that perfect level of tint. We are likely to see low and warm water later in the year and this spring will certainly be the best time to fish any freestone rivers like the Truckee. While

The lake level has gone up a couple feet

by DOUG BUSEY
The lake level has gone up a couple feet. The water temp was 47 degrees and the weather on Wednesday was perfect with no "W". The fishing was a little slow to start. Renee and I trolled most of the lake with all of our hits coming in on the east side.  We trolled various colors and sizes of Raplalas deep and shallow. We managed

This season has been incredible so far

by PYRAMID LAKE FLY FISHING
This season has been incredible so far. Way better than the last two or three years up to this date in the season. It really does not make a lot of sense because the fish that we are catching were alive and well somewhere in the lake then also, they have just shown up more this season. It’s a big lake. The bad thing about

We’ve had a few reports from the river this past week and they’ve all been pretty good!

by KENS SPORTING GOODS STAFF
We’ve had a few reports from the river this past week and they’ve all been pretty good! Down near the “Elbow” there has been some good action with lots of small fish slapping dries but if you want to get into some of the larger fish you need to hit up the Rosachi and/or Sceirine and throw some good sized streamers as well as nymphs. We’ve

Back to back days of 20lb plus fish

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
Day 3 and Al puts a frickn mega in the net! Back to back days of 20lb plus fish by one angler. Almost 50lbs of fish between the 2 trout. Pyramid lake has been kicking out the monsters this season steadily!!!!!

The fishing at Pyramid was outstanding over the last week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The fishing at Pyramid was outstanding over the last week, due in part to the tail end of the storm moving through. As this high pressure system sets in this week, the bite will likely be tough, and anglers will have to get creative to find consistent fishing. When temps hit the low 60’s, the sun is high, and the wind is light, the fish

Flows on the Truckee have stabilized sitting at just under 300 at Glenshire Bridge

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Since last week’s storm pushed through, we have seen the flows on the Truckee stabilize, sitting at just under 300 at Glenshire Bridge and at a bit over 500 at the Farad gauge. These are ideal flows for this time of year, and this coupled with a week of weather in the upper 50’s should really switch on the bite. The rain brought with it a

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

Marilyn’s Pond is closed due to ice

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Marilyn’s Pond is closed due to ice. Fishing will pickup again when the ice comes off this spring.

Fishing has been slow at the ponds

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Fishing has been slow at the ponds. Catfish were stocked during the summer and should start showing up over the next spring and summer. Crawlers off the bottom here can produce a multitude of cold and warm water species including those recently stocked catfish. Look for trout stocking to occur as temps allow this spring.

Fishing has been fair at squaw

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Fishing has been fair at squaw. Ice and snow can limit access at Squaw near the dam. Shore anglers near the inlet and warm spring are catching primarily trout on crawlers and power bait off the bottom. Fishing will improve as we move into spring.

Fishing has been slow at Wilson with limited access due to ice and snow

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Fishing has been slow at Wilson with limited access due to ice and snow. Stocking will resume in the spring when conditions allow.

Fly Fishing Report | Pyramid Lake | late February 2025

by RENO FLY SHOP
The storms we received over the last two weeks made fishing at Pyramid Lake very good. The Truckee River experienced increased flows and now looks to settle around 500cfs at the Reno gauge. Looking forward, we have a a stretch warm weather and little precipitation. Look for the Truckee River BWO hatch to continue and for fishing to improve. Pyramid Lake Midges are still king out at

Fly Fishing Report | Truckee River | late February 2025

by RENO FLY SHOP
Flows have returned to normal after a wet few weeks. The Reno gauge is currently hovering just above 500cfs in Reno. With nice weather in the forecast, flows should be somewhat stable in the coming days. Water is not dirty, nor is it crystal clear. It is holding a greenish blue tint through the Nevada side. The "steelhead green" is helpful for anglers as it
