Western Nevada Fish Reports

Business As Usual

by MATT KOLES
The Truckee River is finally down to normal summertime levels, fishing is good, and the bugs are out in full force. Water temp is a perfect, 58, warming up to about 60 in the afternoons. I've done a few mornings down on the Nevada side, two states one day program, and the fishing is good down there as well. I've been using my G-6

Damn It's Hot

by MATT KOLES
The last few days it's been downright hot here in the Hirsch. Put the beers on ice, get the straw hat out, and put them waders away. The water is still a cool 58 degrees mid-day, and really, that's all that matters. We have plenty of it, water that is, and still the river is not at normal summertime flows. I spent a morning down

Truckee River Fishing Report 7/29

by MATT KOLES
I wouldn't say it's on fire, the Truckee River, but if you have some basic skills you should be catching fish right now. Still a tad high down here in the Hirsch, but lowering daily. The upper stretches, the shire and through town, the water's low, and by mid-day starting to get piss warm. Trout migrate and so should you. Start hitting some faster pocket

Guide Mike Nielsen said mackinaw seem to be in their June transition as we enter August. Fish are coming out of the deep water to mid-depths. Most of his fish are coming on four-ounce Williamson jigs (pink glow or blue mackeel) and weigh three to seven pounds. When the bite is on, it’s red-hot but when it shuts down a lot of work is required.

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
General regulation side is hit or miss. The special regulation no large hatches so its mostly a nymph game. The Glenshire stretch is fishing well and the area near Hirschdale is big water, but clear and fishable. (530) 587-4844

It's July...but it's fishing like it's June. Be the first to your favorite spot.

by MATT KOLES
It's 7/24, and today was the first day I was able to cross the river below Hirschdale. Is was a bit sketchy, but worth it. There's places that still haven't been fished since last fall, and I like to be the first. The Truckee River is still dropping slowly daily, and daily she is fishing better. A perfect 58 degrees and caddis just about everywhere.

The Truckee Is Finally Under 1,000 Cubes

by MATT KOLES
Here in Hirschdale, she's finally under 1000 cubes. The Truckee River hasn't been this low since mid-March. Through town and along the shire it is back to normal summertime flows. There are some strong caddis hatches in the evenings all along the river, especially down here in my zone. Fish seem to be transitioning a bit and are spreading themselves out. You need to cover

The Evening Seems to be the Best Time to Fish the Truckee

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The Flows Conditions are starting to stabilize on the Truckee. Flows are coming down every day and the upper river is in excellent shape. The section from Tahoe City to Truckee is very fishable right now as flows in the town of Truckee are down to 269 CFS. From Truckee to Boca Bridge the flows have come way down as well and getting better every day.

East Carson Flows are at 1140 cfs -- 'Nuff Said

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Flows have been off the charts. They are currently at 1140 CFS but they are coming down daily. It should be a couple more weeks before the run-off settles down and the East Carson becomes fishable.

Trout fishing has been good in the fly fishing area but so-so in the general regulation section on Highway 89. Fly guys use nymphs, stone flies and caddis.  (530) 587-4844

The river continues to pump muddy water into the lake. Those working hard are lucky to get one or two trout per day. (775) 266-3550

The Truckee Is Run'n Fast, But the Streamer Bite Is Still Good

by MATT KOLES
Things are good here on the Truckee River, and the river is dropping slowly daily. The whole river is in great shape all the way down through Nevada. She's still above 1000 cubes here in Hirschdale and on down, but the river has seemed to adjust to the higher flows, to be honest, I kinda like it like this. The dry fly fishing is not

Summertime on the Truckee, after some fish

by MATT KOLES
Ain't no place I'd rather be than on the Truckee River in summer. High's in the 70's, healthy fat fish, and it's only going to get better.

The river is in good shape through town until the Boca Outlet where it gets a bit wild. PMDs golden stones and yellow stones work during the day. Caddis PMDs closer to the evening. It’s been good with streamers and lures, too .  The Little Truckee has dropped into shape. (530) 587-4844

The water is high and murky. Fishing is slow. (775) 266-3550

The Truckee is Damn Close, as the Flows Receed & Warmer Days Come...More Bugs Are Seen

by MATT KOLES
It's not on fire, but it's damn close, the Truckee River that is. Every day she's dropping and more bugs are pop'n. More and more drakes out every day, if we could get that one overcast day, it would, well, you know. Fish are munching mostly on stones and caddis. The whole river is in shape, a bit high, but clear all the way down

Oh! Just a Another Typical Truckee Brown Trout

by MATT KOLES
"Gilligan's" buddy Micheal has been trying to get him to take him out for about three years now. Everytime he comes it snows, or the rivers blown, or we're just to lazy to put the waders on. Even though he's a city kid, he ain't to bad with the graphite. Michael grew up near the Henry's Fork, and this is the biggest trout he's caught.

The Truckee is fishing well right now, but as the flows drop it will get even better

by MATT KOLES
Most folks are doing well from the town of Truckee down to the Boca inflow. Flows are good up there, and just about every bug is out flying around. Fly Selection: Pmds, lil' yellow stones, goldens, drakes, and caddis are on the menu. Water Conditions: The flows are still in the 1400 range down below Boca, but the water is clear to Gray's Creek and the fishing is

The river is high but fishable along Highway 89 and near Glenshire. After that the flows are larger than 2,000 cfs. (530) 587-4844

Flows are tough on the Truckee right now but the runoff is setting us up for a good season

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
July 6th. Man do we have some water! All of the reservoirs that flow into the Truckee are either full or within inches of being full. This is the first time that has happened since the mid 1990's. The good news is we are charged and should get a few years of great water conditions out of this. The short term bad news is we
