Western Nevada Fish Reports

Mackinaw or lake trout fishing has been producing some nice fish for those that have the right gear and knowledge. There are guides available for others. Shore fishing is fair for stocked rainbow trout. Cave Rock was last planted on June 6, 2007, but will be stocked again in the next couple of weeks.

Opened July 15. Fishing has been great early in the morning using fly patterns. Crystal Wooly Bugger and Green Red Throated zonkers have been working as well as sheep creek specials. Fish have been cruizing the shoreline 4' to 5' out. Present your fly's close to the shoreline.

Anglers that can keep away from the aquatic vegetation are catching 14-inch rainbow.

Anglers continue to catch rainbow trout, although the trout fishing has slowed. The largemouth and spotted bass fishing has started to heat up and anglers fishing off the bottom with worms have reported some chunky bullheads.

Fair fishing for rainbow and brown trout to 15 inches in length. Good fishing for smallmouth bass to 13 inches in length. Dark patterns work the best in the turbid water.

The Truckee is still fishing well but is slowing down. The high temps of the day slow things down but as evening approaches the fishing does pick up. Fly anglers are picking up some action on PMD and Little Stones. Try fishing deep with long leaders. Use a drop fly set up with the top fly heavy and the dropper in a size 14 to

Fishing has slowed with the approach of summer. Shore anglers do their best in the early morning. Boat fishermen going deep have reported fair to good success on rainbow and brown trout. Several anglers were checked this past weekend with some nice rainbow trout to 3-pounds that were captured deep trolling (40 feet).

Fly fishing remains good on stocked rainbow and tiger trout. Try a midge pattern behind a prince nymph. Lure fisherman have had good luck with black and yellow Panther Martins. Anglers can now use worms or Power Bait. Use a canoe or float tube to get away from the aquatic vegetation that chokes the shoreline. Shore anglers can find open water around the dam.

Fishing at Lahontan remains very good. Two anglers were checked Sunday fishing 6 hours and catching 31 white bass, 5 crappie and one largemouth bass. Although not large, 6 to 12 inches, the fish were abundant and hungry. The walleye, although not as numerous, are still being caught. Evening fishing is good. Fly fisherman have been using damsel patterns and may fly imitations.

Fair to good fishing for small crappie and yellow perch ??? fish are small.

Fishing remains good for walleye on the reservoir side of the dam as well as on the downstream side of the Pitt-Taylor Dam, but is starting to slow down. Try using Crank Baits for Walleye. Wiper fishing is sporadic, although it can be good once the fish are located. A few anglers report excellent crappie fishing around structure.

Fishing has slowed to an almost halt, although a few anglers are finding cutthroat trolling down to 25 feet.

Gene St. Denis: I've been fishing 50-200 feet deep at Ski Run Shelf, Camp Richardson and the Tahoe Keys. Trolling with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and minnows. Bouncing off the bottom in a serpentine pattern. Macks are 2-7 pounds.

Todd Sodaro and Chad Machado of the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229): Sunday, it was about 85 degrees with a nice breeze. On the 18th, Lucas and Ray Taroli of Oregon used Salmon eggs and nightcrawlers to catch 7 rainbows that totaled 20 pounds. On the 19th, a youngster, "Junior," used Salmon eggs to catch 4 rainbows. Brian Arline of Roseville caught a 4.8 pound rainbow
