Water Conditions Flows are still decreasing slightly on the Truckee River. Water levels are low from Tahoe City to Boca Reservoir, but the color remains clear. With the heat wave the area will see this weekend, water temperatures could be warm during the day, so it is recommended to fish in the evenings and mornings until things cool down. With the hottest weather seen in weeks expected all this week, please limit your time on the Truckee River to early mornings and be sure to keep that thermometer handy. We expect the river to warm quickly this week, especially along sections such as 89-South, down Glenshire Road, and the low flow sections found in Reno. Pretty much the same ole thing on the Truckee River. Good solid fishing in the mornings, slow in the afternoons. Typical late Summer weather and fishing. The water has cooled significantly over the last week. I take a dip every afternoon in the river, and it’s numbing now. That’s at least here in Hirschdale, where there’s a good flow of cold water coming out of Boca. Up

The Truckee River is running low and clear through town and Glenshire. Flows have decreased in the past few weeks, but the flow starts to pick up from Prosser Creek to the stateline border. The mornings are getting colder as we draw nearer to fall. We may not see much of a change in the afternoon temps being in the mid to high 90s, but with such lower temperatures overnight and in the morning fishing has been good.  Fishing has been fair to slow. I recommend getting out as early as you can to beat the heat. Most trollers have gone deeper off the east and north shore. The water level has been going down slowly over the last couple weeks.

August continues to impress on the Truckee River. Historically, August has been a good month for me. Photo above is from an August past.Not so much the last few years. This year, it’s been different though. Not that hot, and overnight lows have been relatively cool, too cold. These trouts are still munching on crayfish. The West has been producing some fish, especially down near the town of Walker as well as the upper end of Walker Canyon near the bridge on Highway 395. Panther Martins and Roostertails have been good spinners to try, salmon eggs, power eggs and crawlers have been good baits. Fly anglers are still doing well with hoppers, stimulators, chubby Chernobyl’s, copper johns, pheasant tails and prince nymphs.

The last week of fishing on the Truckee has been excellent as water temps continue to hover around the high 50’s in the canyon. The upper river along Glenshire Drive is a little skinny at 167 CFS which will make this area warm quicker due to greater sunlight penetration, so because of this we recommend fishing below the Boca confluence to the Nevada state line

Following a week of steady thunderstorms, the Truckee River has fished well and benefited from the recent rainfall. The storms here in Reno passed through and dropped enough rain to raise river flows to just over 700 cfs at the Reno gauge. As a result, water clarity decreased with each shot of rain but flows were quick to come down and fishing has improved in
