Southern Nevada Fish Reports

Anglers using night crawlers are finding rainbow trout in the shadows from the Willow Beach fishing pier to the shallow coves south of the marina. Kayakers are reporting success with striped bass at the south end of Lake Mohave. Shad swimbaits and anchovies are producing fish at dawn and dusk. Boaters are catching black bass up to 4 pounds on soft plastics in the coves.

While temperatures are still hot, fish early and late in the day. Panfish are still creating fun, family fishing opportunities. Lorenzi Park is an excellent location to catch green sunfish and bluegill. They are visible from shore and ready to bite any small piece of worm or hotdog thrown at them.

Anglers are chasing striper boils throughout the Las Vegas Bay area and the Overton Arm. Live shad is the preferred bait, but a variety of shad lures are working just as well. Seasonal aquatic vegetation is presenting shore anglers some challenges. Anglers in boats are having a little more success. Bass are taking dark-colored plastic worms and crawdad imitations. Rainbow trout are hitting rainbow-colored PowerBait or night crawlers in the early mornings.

Anglers are finding low water conditions and weed growth along the shoreline. The vegetation has made shore fishing difficult in some areas. Cooler water temperatures can be found in the deep water along the dam. Boaters are catching trout and bass in open water. Green, brown, or black plastics with glitter are fooling bass. Trout are biting rainbow PowerBait and worms.

Anglers are finding the best time to fish is right after sunrise. Bluegill are providing good action at Floyd Lamb, Lorenzi, and Sunset parks. Lorenzi also has green sunfish swimming in the shallows. These fish are small with small mouths, so hooks no larger than #10 and mealworms are recommended. Bright-colored poppers and spinnerbaits are bringing in bass.

Boaters are chasing striper boils throughout the Boulder Basin and the Overton Arm. Shad swimbaits, topwater lures, and spinnerbaits are all producing fish, many in the 2- to 5-pound range. Shore anglers are reporting black bass activity near Echo Bay. Bone-colored topwater lures and Rat-L-Traps are tempting fish out of grassy coves.

Aquatic vegetation along the shoreline continues to make shore fishing difficult. The best action has been found in open water near the center of the reservoir. Trout are taking PowerBait in rainbow or green with glitter. Bass are taking soft plastic worms and jigs. Crappie fishing has been sluggish.

Despite monsoonal storms, the water level remains low. Aquatic vegetation continues to be a problem for shore anglers. Boaters are catching rainbow trout and bass. The trout are taking PowerBait in rainbow or green with sparkles, and the bass are hitting on soft plastics in green or brown. 

Anchovies are the bait of choice for striped bass anglers along the shorelines of the river. Action is being reported at the south end of Big Bend State Recreation area and just below Davis Dam. Most fish are weighing in between 2 and 5 pounds, but a few lucky anglers have landed fish in the double digits.

Sunfish are active at the urban ponds. Bluegill are taking mealworms and small chunks of night crawler on small hooks. Size 8 or 10 should do it. The best action is during the morning hours before the temperature hits triple digits. Catfish plants are on hold until the end of summer.
