Southern Nevada Fish Reports

 Black Bass action is good in the Cottonwood Basin with the majority of fish coming in at about 2 to 3 pounds. Rat-L-Traps and various crankbaits have been catching the fish. Largemouth bass can be found in the backs of coves near grass beds and submerged brush. Look for stripers in the cool areas of the lake at the north end and at depth in

The striper bite is steady with anglers finding success fishing shallow in the early morning and then switching to deep-diving lures once the heat picks up. Others have found good results by trolling with gizzard shad through the Vegas Wash area and outside of Boulder Beach. Bluegill are biting on night crawler pieces and small jigs.     

Good fishing greeted participants at Saturday’s Free Fishing Day event. One youngster brought in a rainbow trout weighing in at just less than 2 pounds. The fish are taking lures, garlic scented PowerBait or Power Eggs and nightcrawlers with a chunk of mini marshmallow. Jigs with bright colored heads are catching crappie.

This stretch of the river has been hot for stripers and trout. The line sides are averaging about 2 pounds and taking anchovies and a variety of lures. One local angler recommends a jerkbait with a tail. Woolly Buggers seem to be a universal bait and are catching black bass, trout and carp near Big Bend.   

Anglers are finding good fishing for Striped Bass, Black Bass, and Catfish in coves throughout the lake. Plastic baits have been fooling black bass and stripers are hitting segmented trout imitations or frozen anchovies. Catfish also are taking anchovies, and trout are smacking Rooster Tails.    

Summerlike temperatures are pushing anglers off the water during the day. Most are fishing at first light and at dusk. Look for stripers lurking near shallow benches surrounded by deeper water. That is where they are waiting to feed on bait fish. Largemouth bass are making their presence known and have shown up in many coves throughout the Government Wash area. Some anglers have found

Fishing has been excellent with many anglers taking limits of fish. Rainbow and tiger trout have been hitting on a variety of baits and lures, such as small Mepp’s spinners and Rooster Tails. Bait anglers have been having success using PowerBait and Power Eggs in rainbow, orange or green colorations. Crappies also are hitting white jigs with colored heads in pink or green. Bass action

Rainbow trout, bass and crappie action has been very good, especially in the morning and evening hours. The fish are taking a wide variety of baits. Crappie will take small jigs in white with bright accent colors.  Fishing continues to improve below Davis Dam. Anglers are still finding stocked rainbow trout along with stripers in the 1- to 3-pound range. Anglers fishing for trout along Casino Row have done fairly well with Kastmasters. The marshy areas below Laughlin are giving up largemouth bass to anglers fishing from a boat or kayak.  

Black bass action is good in the middle portion of the reservoir. Look for the fish in coves north and south of Cottonwood Cove. Bass and catfish are holding in submerged vegetation not far from shore. Work the brush with plastics and jigs near for bass and try anchovies or chicken livers for catfish.  

Bluegill, bass and catfish have all been active in recent days, but expect the activity to slow down when the triple-digit temperatures settle in to stay.  Mealworms have been working well for catfish and Bluegill. Bass have been a little harder to catch, but a few anglers have been doing well jigging rubber worms or throwing crankbaits.

Night fishing for striped bass and catfish is working best now that we are reaching 100 degree daytime temperatures.  Striped bass are hitting on frozen anchovy pieces between Government Wash and 33 Hole.  Striper boils have been seen throughout the lower basin.  Black bass are hitting on jointed shad lures and plastics outside of Callville Bay and Echo Bay

Fishing rocky shelves with drop shot rigs can produce Smallmouth Bass while the back waters with submerged brush hold Largemouth Bass. Striped Bass in the main body of the lake are taking Shad and Trout imitations near the mouths of coves. Willow Beach Marina has reported good striper action in the river with double-digit fish as large as 19 pounds being caught. Most fish are

 Warm water season has really kicked off with good action for bluegill, bass and catfish at most of the ponds. Catfish are taking stink baits, night crawlers, hotdogs and chicken gizzards. NDOW is reminding anglers that it is illegal to use fish or their parts, other than salmon eggs, as bait in the ponds. Please dispose of unwanted fishing line in the receptacles provided.  

Despite the arrival of summer-like temperatures, anglers have found good action for striped bass. Live shad, anchovies, jigs and various lures are catching fish in the Las Vegas Bay area. Stripers can be found chasing bait at the opening of coves and throughout the wash. Catfish are hitting many of the same baits.
