Nevada Fish Reports

Fishing has been good and will continue to get better with the falling temperatures. Spin fisherman using small rooster tails, spoons, kastmasters, and mepps are catching trout 12-15”” range. Fly fisherman in boats trolling small woolly buggers, leech patterns, and nymphs continue to pick up fish all day long. Some of the better fly patterns include; sheep creek specials, Zug bugs, and red copper John’s.

Fishing has slowed down some with the extreme heat but will pick up fall creeps in. Fishing will just continue to improve with good water conditions and the fall temperatures. Spin Fisherman are finding that Rapala minnow imitations are working well in addition to larger brightly colored jigs. Fly Fisherman are picking up an occasional walleye or bass on chartreuse woolly buggers or clouser minnows

Rainbow trout plants are scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. Daytime highs in the 70s are providing excellent fishing conditions. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of bird hunting opportunities as well as fall fishing, which can be some of the best of the year.

Trout action has been good. Several anglers caught their limits during the past week. Bait fishermen did well using night crawlers and a mini marshmallow. Fly-fishers were catching both rainbows and crappie using Hares Ear Nymphs in olive or natural colorations. Nighttime temperatures are in the 30s, making trout fishing great throughout the day.

Weather is looking good for weekend anglers. Nighttime lows are projected to be in the low 40s. The water level remains low and shorelines are a bit muddy, but the fishing action off the dam remains good. Stripers are biting imitation trout and hard shad baits along Casino Row and downriver through the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area. The fish are averaging 2 to 3 pounds. Action for largemouth and smallmouth bass has picked up in the Cottonwood Basin with the fish chasing silver poppers and watermelon-colored worms. Anglers are finding the black bass along shelves in coves. Over the weekend, anglers using jointed swimbaits caught striped bass in the 10- to 27-pound range near Willow Beach. Slightly cooler temperatures are slowing down the action for warm water fish like catfish, bluegill and bass. Catfish are taking hotdogs and chicken gizzards. Boaters are catching 1- to 3-pound stripers between bouts with windy weather conditions. The fish have been taking anchovies in 40-60 feet of water near the Boulder islands. While up on Lake Mohave, your chances for stripers are better near the dam and above the power lines. The coves on the Arizona side have been a bit better  — even the Arizona side telephone cove was dong OK. Our federal Willow Beach hatchery raises these endangered species. The water level has gone down a couple more feet. Fishing has been slow for both shore and boat anglers over the last week. The last day to fish this year will be Monday the 30th. The lake will then open for the 2020 season on January 1st.

Crappie action is picking up, and the fish are taking Hare’s Ear Nymphs for fly fishers, while bait fishers are doing well with night crawlers suspended below a bobber. Trout fishing has been sluggish but should improve with cooler overnight temperatures. Rooster Tails and other spinners are catching trout as they slurp near the surface in the early mornings and again toward sunset. 

Rainbow trout have been hitting on combinations of night crawlers and mini-marshmallows. Spinners are fooling the fish during the early morning and evening hours. Crappie and bass action have been good with the fish taking spinning lures and small jigs.

Anglers continue to catch a variety of fish. Rainbow trout are hanging in the areas around docks and marshy coves. Rooster Tails and other spinners have been very productive. If you are getting bites but no hook ups, try switching to worms or Woolly Buggers below a bobber. For catfish and stripers, anchovies are the go-to bait.  Black bass are biting dark colored jigs below
