Nevada Fish Reports

Fishing is fair to slow for walleye, crappie, wiper and catfish. A few walleye are being caught slowly trolling minnow imitations or worm harnesses. Trolling faster with rapala minnow imitations is a good method for walleye as well. For crappie use bright colored jigs in the flooded vegetation. The few that fly fish Chimney Reservoir tend to stick with the chartreuse and yellow Clouser minnows.

Reports from the opener were all excellent. The lake is currently full and will likely overtake the south end of the lake as the remaining snowmelt enters the lake. Shore fishing will continue to be good until vegetation takes hold with the summer heat. Fly fisherman using callibaetis mayfly emergers, and parachute adams are finding fishing on the surface early in the day. Damsel nymphs

The opener at Onion was excellent. Spin fishing has been best with a small kastmaster and rooster tails or powerbait off the bottom. Fly fisherman in float tubes are doing well with sheep creek specials and midge larva under an indicator or fishing small streamers slowly trolled behind a float tubes.

Fishing has been good but will likely slow down some with the extreme heat. Fishing will just continue to improve with good water conditions and fall temperatures. Spin Fisherman are finding that Rapala minnow imitations are working well in addition to larger jigs. Fly Fisherman are picking up an occasional walleye or bass on chartreuse woolly buggers or clouser minnows near the dam.

Walker Lake is currently at 44% of capacity and rising. An increase in the lake level is key to the fishery rebounding.

Tom Blotter and I fished with good success last weekend in the early morning and late evening. Rapalas or a flasher and a 1/2 a night crawler had best success. The water level has risen a  few feet on the lake, but has tapered off this week. For boaters, use extreme caution on the lake, as we encountered a lot of debris from the run

Murky water has made fishing tough, though anglers have found good fishing for bass and crappie throughout the day with jigs and Woolly Buggers. Trout prefer hitting PowerBait and night crawlers in the early morning hours or late in the evening. Temperatures are reaching into the 80s during the day and dropping into the 50s at night.

Largemouth bass are hitting crayfish imitations, worms and grubs in darker colors. Green or root beer color tube baits, small jigs and nightcrawler pieces are bringing in crappie. Anglers are having better success later in the morning, but the action slows during the afternoon heat. Fishing picks up again after the heat subsides and shadows return to the water. 

Anglers are reporting good fishing for stripers from the dam south through Casino Row. The fish are averaging two pounds. Stripers and catfish also are being caught near Big Bend. Black bass are going for rattling jigs, while catfish are taking night crawlers and anchovies. Fishing has been best at sunrise and sunset.

Stripers are taking baits off the Willow Beach fishing pier. Anglers are finding success from the shoreline and boats with anchovies and jerkbaits. The lake is also producing channel catfish in and around coves. Crankbaits and plastics are taking largemouth and smallmouth bass.

Bluegill and catfish are the go-to fish at the urban ponds. Mealworms are fooling the bluegill, with the best bite taking place in the early morning or late afternoon. Anglers have had fair success for catfish in the evenings using stink baits. Due to seasonally high temperatures, catfish will not be stocked during the month of July.  NDOW reminds anglers that the limit at all

Anglers are catching a mixed bag of stripers and black bass on plastics and crankbaits. Surface fishing has been good for stripers pursuing shad. There have been some limits of crappie coming out of the Overton Arm.

 Our local angler Eli Davis was using a-long-a and landed a couple of stripers in the 1 pound range. Yep these lures usually produce a larger fish but this time of year we are getting a lot of the smaller striper getting to the bait first. We do have a good trout population also and our rainbow trout are being planted to help with the
