Nevada Fish Reports

Spooner Lake remains open to fishing during the winter months but is typically covered in ice by mid-december.  Ice fishing is not permitted at the lake.

White bass from shore are popular now and anglers have reported catching Wipers up to 5 lbs in the last few weeks. The bass have been a little inconsistent but when you find them, expect to hook up often. Spin fisherman using chartreuse and white jigs, kastmasters, and small spinners are finding good bass numbers. Fly fisherman are finding bass on bright streamers along many

Fishing has been slow.  Some wipers are being caught below the dam.  Fishing will just continue to improve with good water conditions. Spin Fisherman are finding that Rapala minnow imitations are working well. Fly Fisherman are picking up the occasional bass on chartreuse woolly buggers and clouser minnows.

 Thin ice now covers most of the reservoir and is unsafe to walk on.  Holes can be drilled off the fishing dock to access the fish.  For current ice conditions contact Spring Valley State Park at 775-962-5102.  

Anglers are finding good fishing for both striped bass and stocked rainbow trout.  PowerBait in orange or rainbow colors are a good choice for trout.  A variety of spinners also are catching trout. Striped bass are biting anchovies from Casino Row to Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area.

Catfish are hitting on anchovies out of Katherine Landing.  Striped Bass are most active at Willow Beach and near Davis Dam on the south end of the reservoir.  Stripers in the 1 to 3-pound stripers are taking anchovies, and some lucky anglers are bringing in fish as large as 10 pounds on trout-pattern swimbaits.     

 With the Nevada Department of Wildlife annual rainbow trout stocking program anglers are finding good action at the local urban ponds. Spinning lures, small spoons and flies will catch the fish.  If that’s a little more work than you like, the fish will also take PowerBait, Power Eggs or mealworms. Fishing action at Lake Mead is slowing down as nighttime temperatures drop into the low 40s, but those who brave the chilly mornings are still catching Striped Bass.  Anglers are having good luck with shad and trout imitation lures along.  Live shad also are catching the line sides and can be found along the shorelines in Las Vegas Bay.  Catfish are hanging close to shore

Fish are holding in moderate to slower water, and hugging the bottom.  Focusing on pockets and inside seams can prove very productive.  European style nymphing will be the most productive by providing sensitivity to light takes.  If the water slows down considerably it might be best to throw on an indicator to get a good drift. With smaller flies, adding weight to your rig is key

Water levels are slowly rising, but the upper end of the reservoir is covered by thin ice. There is still open water along much of the dam and anglers are having good luck for rainbows using PowerBait in orange, green or rainbow colorations.  Worms and PowerBait are producing the most bites for trout, with small spinning lures also worth a shot.  The areas below Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area and along Casino Row are producing both stripers and trout.  Line sides are hitting on anchovies fished off the bottom and pencil poppers and other top-water baits.
