Spring fishing on the Truckee is improving

by MATT KOLES
After four days of heavy winds finally they have laid down. We should continue the good spring fishing we've been experiencing in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area on the Truckee River. There still is a descent snow pack up top, but so far we've been having a gradual melt. The river has been staying in the good, fishy-flow stage. Flows are about 300 cfs below

Largemouth and smallmouth bass are still providing anglers with the best action.

Largemouth and smallmouth bass are still providing anglers with the best action. Most are tipping the scales at about three to four pounds, though the occasional fish pushes the eight-pound mark. The truth about fly fishing on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
As a guide sometimes you're a rock star, and sometimes you're not. Sometimes we get into fish, sometimes we don't. It's never easy on this Truckee River. We have been catching fish this week, but it seems we always work for them. Spring is a good time to catch bigger fish, but the water is still cold and not every fish is active. Sometimes in

The last few days we’ve had perfect fishing weather for the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
Cloudy and bit rainy, perfect. Fish are spread out in both states. You'll find them everywhere now. Pocket water, banks, riffles and runs. Some rainbows are still spawning, but I'm feeling the majority of fish are post spawn, especially in Nevada. The big blue wings are now out in California, and it won't be long until the march browns show up here. Skwalas are out

With the fish in spawning mode working baits near rocks or stumps in the shallows should yield some hits. Another large striper weighing in at 26 pounds was taken at mile marker 49 on a Rooster Tail. Just proves that

by JIM REID
We've had a few clients on the ranch this week and they've done pretty well. It's looking like right now the only patterns you'll want to add to your arsenal that are different from the ones listed for the Cali side would be a poxyback stone and micro stone.
