Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
River Ranch to the bigger pools is a good place to drift nightcrawlers or salmon eggs. The fly section has baetis activity. Bigger flows below Boca invite nymphing with stone flies and October Caddis topped with mayflies. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Best fly results at Pyramid Lake (NV) come from Pontoon Boats or Float Tubes

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
So far the fly fishing reports have been as expected. After a very warm summer and early fall the water is still very warm. This usually keeps fish in a little deeper water as is the case now. The boaters are catching a bunch of fish in 20-40 feet of water trolling. As for fly fishermen, the best reports have been coming from Pontoon Boats

The wild fish in the Truckee River between Tahoe City & Truckee are on the bite

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The flows on the Truckee remain excellent from the Town of Truckee down through Reno. The water has finally cooled off and the fishing has been very good. Normal fall conditions are taking shape for sure. The upper stretches down through the Glenshire area are low and very clear. This is a great time of year to fish the river between Tahoe City and Truckee. The

Redemtion for a client on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
I love it when guests come back and get a little redemption. Jonathon lost one of the biggest browns we hooked that year in summer of 2010. It's not easy landing a big Truckee River fish. What you see on this blog are fish we do land. The fish we don't land stay on my guests mind for a long time. Hell, they stay on

The Sceirine Ranch is fishing excellent

by JIM REID
The ranch is fishing excellent as well, one of the keys to fishing with these lower flows both on the Cali and Nevada side is to focus more on the deeper sections where there are more fish hanging out.

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Excellent fishing continues here. Best action is at Hell’s Kitchen or Warrior but trollers are doing well all over the lake. Shore angling is improving. Most of the cutthroat caught last week were larger than 17 inches. Biggest last weekend was a 9.15 pound cutthroat. An 11 pounder was caught Tuesday. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
General regulation section is just OK. The special reg stretch is producing decent fish. No significant hatches. Nymphing is the way to go and the water below Hirschdale is best. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Fishing on the Truckee has now gone from Summer to Fall

by MATT KOLES
We went from summer to fall in what felt like two days. Ah, the crispness of fall. Thought I was going to die last week in the sun, today, had the pataguchi on-all day. The Truckee River in both states is producing fish. Nymphs, streamers, and sometimes drys are getting 'er done. October caddis, and baetis are the main bugs. Streamers, well, they can be

Do you count a "hook-up" as a fish caught, or do you have to net that fish?

by MATT KOLES
Guides count hookups as fish, guests count fish to the net as fish. I figure I did a good job as a guide if we've hooked fish. I know guests get bummed, and even think the fishing is lousy if they've only landed a couple fish, but if they've hooked 8-10, especially on this river, then they should feel pretty stoked. We ain't on the

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Monday’s opening day was a success. Big fish was a 16 pound cutthroat caught by boat. Water is still warm so better action is being enjoyed by boat. Shore anglers are struggling. Best action is at Hell’s Kitchen. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The California side is good for nymphing below Boca Reservoir. The water out of Boca doubles the Truckee flow. Nevada side also is very good.  Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Pyramid Lake (NV) opened with a bang.

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
If you like to troll in 20-40 feet of water that is. We are experiencing a very warm fall and the water temps at Pyramid are still very warm. This has kept fish out of the shallows for sure. There are tons of Tui Chubs schooled up along various beaches but the Trout are not there yet. As the water temps continue to cool we

The Truckee is in great shape from Tahoe City all the way through Reno

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The upper stretch is low but it can fish really well at lower levels. This stretch has more small wild Rainbows and Browns that can get podded up in the bigger pools in the fall. Most of the larger tributaries of the Truckee like Donner Lake, Prosser and Boca Reservoirs are donating water pretty evenly right now. Overall the flows are down from this summer.

This is the year of the endless summer on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
The heat wave continues, but fall weather is in the forecast. That should mean blue wings, october caddis, and streamer fishing. It would be nice to get some rain and move some fish around, but the cool weather will help. It just seems that we haven't had any fall weather yet. The water is a little skinny up along Glenshire, but still pretty perfect down

The art of releasing that large Truckee 'Bow

by MATT KOLES
There's nothing like the feeling of holding a big fish and watching it swim away. Fortunately I figured out catch and release at a young age. For me now, it's about that tail kick, you know, when they punch out of your hand and swim away. If they kick hard you know you've done a good job of releasing and reviving your fish. Never throw

Sceirine Ranch is fishing very well

by JIM REID
The ranch is also fishing very well, mostly the same patterns as on the California side. They've also been picking up some fish on dark lords and prince nymphs. The streamer action has been very good on the ranch too.

Baetis, Caddis & Stones are doing the trick on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
Full on Indian Summer has kicked in. Nights are cool again, but warm sunny days have kept the nymph rigs busy. The dry fly, and streamer fishing just hasn't been that good for us this week. Down and dirty and you will get some head shakes. Baetis, October Caddis, stones, and worms will all get you fish on the nymph rig. In fact, you can

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Kokanee are gathering for their run up Taylor Creek. Most are turning color. Jigs get mackinaw from 120 to 200 feet of water. Cave Rock was planted last week with 1,700 pounds of rainbow trout by Nevada.  Kastmaster lures or worms have been the most productive.  Gene St. Denis. Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Low flows from Tahoe City to the Boca outflow. Concentrate on the deeper pools. Water is on the warm side. Use bait in the general regulation areas. Below town use copper Johns, nymphs. October caddis patterns are a good bet.  Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Lake closes to fishing on Sunday and re-opens Jan. 1. (775) 266-3550

Some Al Troth stories (originated the Elk Hair Caddis) from a couple of days fishing on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
Had the pleasure of taking out Bob and his buddy Keith the last few days. Both great guys to spend some time with on the water. Bob's been around a while, and like myself, loves the craft of fly tying. Bob gave me some original Al Troth flies that Al tied for him some years ago. Al originated the Elk Hair Caddis. Al has

Sceirine Ranch is reporting 15 to 25 fish per day

by JIM REID
The ranch has also been fishing very well, most anglers reporting 15 to 25 fish per day. Lots of nice fish going over 20 inches. Pretty much the same patterns as on the California side have been working, also they've been doing pretty well with some dry/dropper rigs as well.

This is what they call "Prime Time" fishing on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
This is it folks, right now until the end on November on the Cali side. After that it will be to cold and you will be bummed you didn't get up here this fall. By the end of November, I'll pretty much only be fishing the Nevada side. The Nevada side is fishing very good right now too. It is only going to get

What it like to guide on the Truckee when it's Easy

by MATT KOLES
Hard to believe I got paid for the last couple days on the Truckee River. It's nice when the fish cooperate, and the dudes in the boat fish cool. Had some young hands that fished every inch of water, and some old hands that can still work the water. Good times, with good bull shitting and fishing. Thanks guys.
