New Boat Smell

by MATT KOLES
I'm back floating on an Aire raft again, in my opinion the best rafts in the business. Thankfully, I had a few hours yesterday to float the miracle mile section up from my house in Hirschdale. You have to get that new raft smell off, you know, that new smell of new rubber. It's been days since I actually strung up the rods for myself.

Sceirine Ranch is producing lots of 20 inch fish these days

by JIM REID
The ranch has fished very well this weekend, lots of fish over 20 inches coming out to play. Chubby chernobyls, stoneflies, dark lords, dead drift crayfish have been working well along with various midge and caddis nymph patterns. Now that the flows are lower the ranch is getting booked up a week or more in advance so give a call ahead of time if you

Old Clients

by MATT KOLES
It's always great to take out the old clients, the ones you've taken out season after season, especially the ones that can fish. I've taken Bob out for awhile now, gotten to know him a bit. The old boy can tell some good stories, throw a tight loop, all while cracking some jokes at the same time. Good stories, like trying to keep up drinking

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Mackinaw and kokanee combo trips have been quite good. Limits are coming in each day. Kokanee are found from the surface to 50 feet from Camp Richardson to Emerald Bay. Most are in the 12-13 inch range. Pautzke’s fire corn helps and lure.  Mackinaw are 120- to 170-feet down and averaging three to seven pounds. Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Fly fishing is quite good below Truckee. Little yellow stoneflies and caddis patterns are quite productive. There are stoneflies during the day. Flows are ideal all the way down to stateline. (530) 587-4844

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The lake is full and there is a current running through it. Those who anchor and fish deep with bait get a few trout. No limits. (775) 266-3550

Good Times

by MATT KOLES
This time of year we usually get into the dog days of August, you know, warm water temps and sluggish fish, but this year is not typical, and the fishing still feels more like July. The fishing is good, and will remain good for the rest of August on the Truckee River. Stones, caddis, crays, and hoppers are on the menu this month. Great weather,

2 Foot Brown Caught on the Truckee

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Summer is here and the water conditions are absolutley perfect. Out guides have been really busy over the past few weeks and we have had some exceptional days including numerous days where clients have caught 20 plus fish and last week a 2 foot Brown Trout was caught on the Truckee River. 30 years of guiding experience and more usage permits to take our clients just

The Truckee is really fishing well right now

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The Truckee is in great shape from Lake Tahoe all the way through Reno. For the first time this year the entire river is fishable, Wadeable and in great shape. Now is the time to come to town if you want to fish the Truckee River. California - All of the Reservoirs have been stabilized and the flows coming out of the major tributaries are being

The East Carson is still high and fishing should improve as the water level drops

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Flows are down to 501 CFS. The East Carson is the closest thing we have to a freestone river in our area. What that means is there is not much control on the flows. Most of the water in the East Carson comes from creeks, springs and natural run off. More of the snowpack is gone now and the East Carson should continue to gradually

It's prime time on Truckee River right now, pick a section, and get after them...

by MATT KOLES
It is getting a little hot in the afternoons, but fishing is pretty much good all day. Caddis and yellow stones in the evenings, with a few big heads coming up. Nymphing during the day with crays, stones, and caddis, seem to be doing the trick. The grass is tall this year, and the hoppers are out, we should have some good late August hopper

The Ranch is fishing very well with the lower flows

by JIM REID
The ranch is fishing excellent with this lower flow, most of the same patterns that work on the California side will work on the ranch as well. We've also had some good reports on dead drift crawfish, birds nest, and dry/dropper rigs with a chubby chernobyl on top and a nymph or two dropper.

Business As Usual

by MATT KOLES
The Truckee River is finally down to normal summertime levels, fishing is good, and the bugs are out in full force. Water temp is a perfect, 58, warming up to about 60 in the afternoons. I've done a few mornings down on the Nevada side, two states one day program, and the fishing is good down there as well. I've been using my G-6

Sceirine produced a lot of 18 to 22 inch fish this week

by JIM REID
The ranch has fished well this past week, lots of real quality fish in the 18 to 22 inch range. Nymphs like Weir's caddis pupa, birds nest, zebra midge, flashback emerger, copper john and pheasant tails have all been working.

Damn It's Hot

by MATT KOLES
The last few days it's been downright hot here in the Hirsch. Put the beers on ice, get the straw hat out, and put them waders away. The water is still a cool 58 degrees mid-day, and really, that's all that matters. We have plenty of it, water that is, and still the river is not at normal summertime flows. I spent a morning down

Truckee River Fishing Report 7/29

by MATT KOLES
I wouldn't say it's on fire, the Truckee River, but if you have some basic skills you should be catching fish right now. Still a tad high down here in the Hirsch, but lowering daily. The upper stretches, the shire and through town, the water's low, and by mid-day starting to get piss warm. Trout migrate and so should you. Start hitting some faster pocket

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Guide Mike Nielsen said mackinaw seem to be in their June transition as we enter August. Fish are coming out of the deep water to mid-depths. Most of his fish are coming on four-ounce Williamson jigs (pink glow or blue mackeel) and weigh three to seven pounds. When the bite is on, it’s red-hot but when it shuts down a lot of work is required.

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
General regulation side is hit or miss. The special regulation no large hatches so its mostly a nymph game. The Glenshire stretch is fishing well and the area near Hirschdale is big water, but clear and fishable. (530) 587-4844

It's July...but it's fishing like it's June. Be the first to your favorite spot.

by MATT KOLES
It's 7/24, and today was the first day I was able to cross the river below Hirschdale. Is was a bit sketchy, but worth it. There's places that still haven't been fished since last fall, and I like to be the first. The Truckee River is still dropping slowly daily, and daily she is fishing better. A perfect 58 degrees and caddis just about everywhere.

The Flows are down on the Ranch and it is really fishing well

by JIM REID
We've had several clients on the Sceirine this week and all have done well. Now that the flows are down a bit the ranch is much easier to fish, and there's lots of nice fish hanging out there. Caddis nymphs, and midges just like the Cali side have been doing well, also birds nest, princes and dark lords have been good.

The Truckee Is Finally Under 1,000 Cubes

by MATT KOLES
Here in Hirschdale, she's finally under 1000 cubes. The Truckee River hasn't been this low since mid-March. Through town and along the shire it is back to normal summertime flows. There are some strong caddis hatches in the evenings all along the river, especially down here in my zone. Fish seem to be transitioning a bit and are spreading themselves out. You need to cover

The Evening Seems to be the Best Time to Fish the Truckee

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The Flows Conditions are starting to stabilize on the Truckee. Flows are coming down every day and the upper river is in excellent shape. The section from Tahoe City to Truckee is very fishable right now as flows in the town of Truckee are down to 269 CFS. From Truckee to Boca Bridge the flows have come way down as well and getting better every day.

East Carson Flows are at 1140 cfs -- 'Nuff Said

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Flows have been off the charts. They are currently at 1140 CFS but they are coming down daily. It should be a couple more weeks before the run-off settles down and the East Carson becomes fishable.

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Trout fishing has been good in the fly fishing area but so-so in the general regulation section on Highway 89. Fly guys use nymphs, stone flies and caddis.  (530) 587-4844
