Fish numbers are very good in the river right now. Spring fishing can be some of the best fishing of the year, but also some of the most frustrating. In early April, Bonneville cutthroat trout will be staging to spawn in smaller tributaries. Any cutthroat trout you catch, from Great Salt Lake to Echo Reservoir, must be immediately released. On colder days, midges and smaller nymphs are usually the best bet if you’re fly fishing. On warmer days, trout will take streamers and even dry flies. To catch fish, you may have to use different fly presentations on the same day. Small nymphs of midges, sow bugs, caddisflies and mayflies also work well. Streamers in various colors are also a good bet. If you’re spin fishing, spinners, jigs or crankbaits can be used to target trout. As the snow melts, water levels and colors will change daily throughout the drainage. Fish will move into slower flows, so using artificial baits that create vibration will work better. Nightcrawlers are also a good option.
