Western Nevada Fish Reports

Flows are Great

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Current flows are great right now and with the warmer temps during the day it is a great time to get out and fish the Big Truckee! From Glenshire down to State Line it has been pretty good for this time of year and the trout being caught look healthy. As we move on to March look for spawning Rainbows and try to

Lake is fishing Well

by RENO FLY SHOP
The lake has been fishing really well. So well in fact that the last month has surprised even some of the ‘old timers’. We can’t even imagine what this spring is going to be like.
The recent storms have brought a bunch of fresh water to the lake and with it a fair amount of mud and floating and debris. The southern end of the lake

Truckee River Fish Report

by RENO FLY SHOP
The recent high water did wonders for the river. This was the highest flow event that we have seen since July 2012 at the Farad Gage. CURRENT CONDITIONS OF THE TRUCKEE RIVER AT FARAD While the river was high this brought a great ‘flushing’ flow to the system. Fish were able to move around and had access to an abundance of new food sources that were mobilized

Lake Tahoe Mackinaw Report

by HANS MOXLEY
Hooked Up Sportfishing out of Carnelian Bay, CA checked in with a fishing update for Lake Tahoe. Today we have good fishing today. We caught 3 Macks for our group of 2 anglers. The fishing was hot one minute and then gone the next. The good news is that Mackinaw is what’s for dinner! Yum!If you are interested in fishing

Big Truckee Update

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Current flows are starting to come down as a lot of rain fell all day last Friday. River peaked at 2450 CFS on Saturday! Good for the river as it hasn't seen flows like those for years now. As water comes back into shape Hirschdale and the larger pools around the diversion dam and stateline have been the spots. Streamers, Baetis,

Pyramid Lake Fish Report

by LIZ WEIRAUCH
Pyramid Lake is in it's doldrums ... this does not mean fish aren't being caught, it just means you work a bit longer. Spawn will be starting in about 6 - 8 weeks and the fish will come in close to the shore, cruising like a wolf pack. We've gotten several calls from people wanting to float tube Pyramid... a word

Truckee River Update

by LIZ WEIRAUCH
Reports from NDOW shocking survey on the Truckee River was a pleasant surprise. The survey's confirmed that the river did lose a high percentage of the larger fish, though some larger fish were measured. The pleasant surprise was the amount of the newer generations that did survive the warm waters. Knowing that brown trout survive slightly higher water temperatures, they see a

Spring Predictions

by MATT KOLES
I have not been out to Pyramid Lake in a bit. The fishing has been solid at the lake the last month though. Take a look at Instagram, seems like everyone is out there roping big fish. I’ve been busy on the river around the house here, but will get back out there. This spring will probably go nuts out there.

Big Flows this past Weekend

by MATT KOLES
Things got real big over the weekend. Flows on the Truckee River got up over 2,000 cfs here in the Hirsch, and over 3,000 through Reno pretty much overnight on Friday. Heavy, heavy rains. We haven’t seen flows that big since winter 2012. Flows like that are usually a fairly common occurrence every winter, we just haven’t had those pulsing flows in a while- been no

Watch out for the Wind

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Still fishing well here but be careful for those windy fall days if you are utilizing a boat! This lake is notorious for capsizing boats! For those throwing hardware from the shore we have stock in the Sierra Spoons in the best colors and for those trolling the lake we have new flatfish patterns from Hendrix Outdoors, Lyman's, and Murphy's Vibrator Spoons.

3 More Tagged Fish

by TOPAZ LODGE STAFF

We have had 15 total tagged fish so far with three tagged fish in the last week. Overall we have had 395 fish turned in over 2 pounds with 54 of them this week. Our biggest fish of the week

Crosby Lodge Update

by CROSBY LODGE
Valerie Taylor from Crosby Lodge in Sutcliffe, NV checked in yesterday from Pyramid Lake. It appears that the constant weather has not affected the fishing. Valerie sent us three photos of impressive fish. The details are listed below: 1/26/16 - Steve Burgess of Meadow Vista Calif - 14 lbs 5.2oz 32in - fishing at Warrior Point by boat using a Speedy Shiner Lure. 1/27/16 - Ray Frye

Typical Winter Fishing

by RENO FLY SHOP
Mild weather has let us get out and enjoy typical winter fly fishing conditions on the Truckee.  We often get very mild, if not warmish, days in between storms here in Northern Nevada and this week was just that. We found fish in both California and Nevada.  Streamer fishing and nymphing (both high sticking and indicator) fishing is the way to go right now. Focus on the

Fishing Well

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Continues to fish well, especially for those who have boats! Now down to 15-30 fish days for some and the size of the Cutthroats are still good. This time of year it's better to get out prior to a High Pressure system moving in, that means windy with or without precip is ideal. Best when wind is coming at you as opposed

Be Prepared

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Current flows are decent and with a lot of ice and slush along most the river any fishing will be tough. If you do find some open water(fish will be in the deeper pools with some sort of flow) you'll be throwing midges and Baetis patterns. Rain coming in on Friday and then giving away to intermittant snow showers Saturday and Sunday.

Week 4 Derby Update

by TOPAZ LODGE STAFF
Here is the derby report for week 4. The fishing was really good during the week we had 4 tagged fish brought in and so far a total Of 352 fish over 2lbs brought in since opening day. The biggest fish of the week was 5lbs 3oz at 24in long caught by Carin Ford of Sierraville, Ca. The 2nd biggest fish of the week was 3lbs 7oz at

Truckee River Fish Report

by MATT KOLES
Clearing out for the week, sunny mild weather until this weekend. Good time to get on the river if you haven’t fished the Truckee River in a while. We have water again, good flows, and fat healthy fish. Hopefully the parade of storms continues into spring and we have a stockpile of water. It looks as if that will happen. Flows are about 250 cfs here in

Golden Algae Blamed For Fish Die-Off At Rye Patch Reservoir

by PAUL NELSON
KTVN Channel 2 - Reno Tahoe News Weather, Video - Rye Patch Reservoir has been known for some of its large game fish, but a substantial fish die-off could have a huge impact on fish populations. After four years of drought, the man-made lake is only about 10% full, leaving its ecosystem vulnerable. The Nevada Department of Wildlife says Golden Algae is the reason for

Southern Beaches HOT!

by RENO FLY SHOP
The fishing can be described as really good one day and difficult the next. And when we mean good it is REALLY good. Multiple fish/angler/day and usually at least one or two over 10 pounds. We have heard of quite a few large (15+ pound) fish being caught daily from several different beaches.
Seems that the fish being caught all over the lake with a concentration

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

by RENO FLY SHOP
Typical winter style fishing on the Main Truckee seems to be the name of the game. As you can listen to in Episode 9 of the Reno Fly Shop Podcast. Winter is the time for quality over quantity. High sticking and indicator fishing in the slower water can produce some really nice fish. We have been out with a dry/dropper on calm cloudy days and

Truckee River in Reno/Sparks Fish Report

by RENO FLY SHOP
Several reports have come in from folks venturing down below Reno/Sparks on the Main T. They were somewhat motivated by the discussion with NDOW on Episode 11 of the Reno Fly Shop Podcast and their results of the Fall Surveys. While the observations were consistent with their results they ran into a few fish with streamers and even saw several rising on a cloudy day
