Western Nevada Fish Reports

This is a great time to be on the Truckee River. Stocking began in late March and there is plenty of water to toss a line. When the runoff comes off this year’s big snowpack, fish the edges of the river (slower water). It is not a secret where the trout are stocked. Upper Carson River has not been stocked yet, spring flows are still high, as flows drop stocking will commence and fishing should pick up after that. Very low water conditions. Very few places to fish.

Season opened on January 1, 2016. For a group of hard core anglers this is an annual tradition and anyone participating will get a jump on the 2016 fishing season. Topaz still fishing good from boats, rainbow averaging 16-18 inches, limits are being caught by some.

Fishing has been slow and the weed beds are reaching out about 30-40 yards from the shoreline. Recent gill net surveys showed healthy populations of rainbow trout in about 5-6 feet of water right now.

Lahontan did not go dry in 2015 but it came close. Fish did survive and water is being directed in to the reservoir. It remains to be seen how good fishing will be this spring because of the effects of the drought. If you like fishing for carp, this is the place to go to get some nicely sized carp. No good reports from Lahontan

The East Walker River is very low (31 c.f.s to begin April) and very clear. The fish truck has visited this river. Fish in the spring because there is no guarantee that the river will fishable past late spring or early summer. Check the regulations for rules governing fishing on the East Walker. EWR fishing starting to pick up for wild brown trout.

Trout fishing should be good with the cool spring temps. Bass fishing will pick up later this spring and should provide great opportunity fishing throughout the summer.

Has been fishing good for trout. It was stocked with 4,000 trout in March. Bass fishing should pick up with warmer weather.

Fishing has been slow to fair. As it warms up fishing is expected to improve. Note that all tiger muskie must be released and report the tag # to NDOW.

The golden algae bloom that led to a substantial fish kill in the fall of 2015 has left a big question mark over the immediate future of this fishery. Fishing is expected to be slow, due to the fish die off that occurred in 2015. A few catfish survived the die off. Stocking and rebuilding the fishery will begin this spring and summer. Rye Patch

No new updates. No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lakes since 2009. Launching is not possible right now.
