Pretty good solid winter fishing here on the Truckee River. We’re getting some more to our snowpack this week. Cold in the mornings- warming into the afternoon. All tactics will get you some fish on the Truckee right now. Pretty much any section you should be able to pick up some fish. You do not usually get big numbers of fish this time of year,

Dave Rossman manager of Topaz General Store and RV Park reports a slow down of 2lb and tagged trout being weighed in for the week. Rossman weighed-in three 2lb fish and only 2 tagged fish for the week. Bank fishermen using Power Bait seemed to have the best luck. Current flows are decent and with a lot of ice and slush along most the river any fishing will be tough. If you do find some open water(fish will be in the deeper pools with some sort of flow) you'll be throwing midges and Baetis patterns. More storms adding snow to our snowpack this week, we’re having a good winter in the Tahoe region. Flows on the Truckee River are anywhere from about 50-Truckee-140-Hirschdale-200-Nevada. Pretty descent for winter actually. Storms are still coming in on the cold side and it is snowing basically to about the Hirchdale level, 5,500 feet. Lake Topaz was buzzing with the anglers catching their limits for the “paid for fishing derby” annual event on opening day. The derby starts off the fishing season at Topaz which on the first day of January and ends Saturday, April 17 with a drawing for prizes. Pyramid Lake has been producing some good action for larger fish but not yet the numbers game that we will see in the Spring. We are at 111% of average snowpack in the Northern Sierra’s. More is on the way tonight. A very big departure from the last 4 years. The Truckee River came up again to almost 500 cfs here in the Hirsh, way higher down lower, and has mellowed out to about 300 today here. It should be slowly lowering until the next high snow/ rain event. Funny

The fishing has been tough. If the winds aren't blowing and the marina is not frozen over we have been getting some nice Lake Trout. Nothing big to note. Stay tuned.
