Western Nevada Fish Reports

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Boaters are getting limits from deep water. Trollers start on the southeast side of the lake 25 feet deep with Rapalas, nightcrawler/flashers or black/silver or black/gold Needlefish. Trout weigh better than a pound. Recreational boat traffic is making it more difficult. Shore fishermen are struggling. (775) 266-3550

Whenis the last time you caught a Brown like this?

by MATT KOLES
It's been a few years since I've been able to effectively fish all my old slots and seams here on the Cali side. The water over the past couple springs has just been so dam high. The Nevada side is usually a hundred or so cfs lower, which makes it easier to fish. Sure we caught our fair share of fish up here, but I

It's a smorgasborg of bugs on the Truckee River, a virtual Buffet for trout

by MATT KOLES
It's a smorgasbord of bugs up here on the Truckee River. Flows are a perfect 520 coming out of Boca. The upper river just got some water in it today with releases out of Tahoe. Green Drakes are finally out in good numbers, pmds, caddis, yellow stones, and now some goldens. Looks like a Hometown Buffet on a Friday night. Find out what fish are

Gilligan sneaks in a session for himself

by MATT KOLES
I often get asked if I get out to fish for myself much. This time of year, not really, I'm busy guiding. I get my time in, trust me. I go out to check the river often, but it's short fishing stints. Late fall and winter are usually when I get most of my fishing time in. I'm on the water every day and I

Mackinaw from three to eight pounds are being pulled from 40 to 200 feet deep. Browns are found 25 to 35 feet deep and some even deeper. Recent derby had a 26 pound mackinaw as a winner. Runner-up was 18.8 pound mack. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552, Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

There are march browns, black ants to imitate for fly fishers. Flows are such that access is good and wadeable. (530) 587-4844

Reports from Pyramid Lake (NV) have been pretty good despite that fact that fishing will close soon

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
There are still a few die hards fishing Pyramid. Reports have actually been pretty good. The cooler weather has kept the water in pretty good shape and there are still some fish cruising the shallows. 5-20 fish days are common right now. South end beaches like Wino, Sand hole and Blockhouse are doing well Beaches further North like the North Nets Spider Point and Warrior.

The dry fly fishing could hardly be better on the Truckee River

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The water has dropped to perfect fishing levels this past week. The weather has been tough for the last few days but the forecast is for clear and sunny through the next week. Bugs are hatching (especially in the evenings) and the fishing is great. Caddis, Little Yellow Stones, Baetis and the beginnings of the green drake hatch in the canyon section have

Very few have braved the wind but those who have were rewarded with trout to three pounds. Use Rapalas 25 feet below the surface. A handful of three pound bass have been caught in recent days. (775) 266-3550

The flows on the Truckee have dropped below 400 cfs & the fish are in their normal haunts

by MATT KOLES
I guess I was wrong about the weather, but hey, it's still spring in the mountains and anything can happen. I was really hoping for a biblical hatch of g-drakes, but instead the God's reigned down pmds for all those that were on the water the last couple days. Pmds seem to be the main dish on the Truckee River menu, hopefully, caddis, drakes and

The fishing has been good on the Truckee and should stay that way

by MATT KOLES
Rain showers are in the forecast this week, and with dropping flows daily, the bugs will pop my friends. We should see some good hatches of drakes, pmds, caddis, and little yellow stones this week, throughout the whole Truckee River system. The fishing has been good, and should continue to stay good. There is no other place I'd rather be than on the Truckee

The flows are making the fishing "tough" on the Truckee right now

by MATT KOLES
I have to admit we didn't kill it, but we did work hard and found some fish on a float yesterday in the eastbound and down. Actually, worked hard the day before too. Flows are a little to high for my liking down there now, and though we did get a few on the streamers, it just wasn't "on". Still a good day with some

Guide Mike Nielsen is fishing for browns and mackinaw in the shallows to depths of 150 feet. Fish are in transition, moving from shallows to deeper water but fish are feeding heavily. Big plugs will work. Trout are stuffed with crayfish. Macks to 20 pounds have been caught near Cave Rock and Sand Harbor, where macks are binging on planted trout. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Water is best through town. Flows are high below Boca. Blue wing olives and March browns have been best producers. (530) 587-4844

Snow last Friday, wind over the weekend kept anglers off the water. Wednesday was the first day a good number of anglers could get out and pursue trout. Smallmouth bite is picking up. A lot of smallies in the three-pound class are taking crankbaits along the edges of the lake. Bite will get better as the lake warms. (775) 266-3550

Despite the weather and the flows, they are still catching fish on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
We might not see another cold front until October, gotta love the Sierras-California. High pressure will settle in bringing with it mild temps and sunshine for basically all of summer, except for the afternoon thunderstorms. The river is still up below the Hirsch, clear, but near the 1000k mark. Hasn't stopped us from catching fish though

Would youl ike to be this angler on the Truckee, holding this Brown Trout?

by MATT KOLES
It seems like it always snows on Memorial Day weekend, you can just about count on it. It snowed yesterday and last night in Truckee. Snowed all the way down to Reno actually. At least I wasn't out camping in a tent somewhere. The waters up, near a 1000 cubes in the Hirsch and down below. The best section of river to fish would be

The wind pummeled the Truckee today, but we still got a great Brown

by MATT KOLES
We've been taking a beating by the wind this week on the Truckee River. Pummeled is the word. Tommorow rains in the forecast with less wind, thank god. Bummer if you're gearing up for a weekend camping trip with the kids. The water master has got the gates open on Boca, and Stampede. Flows here in the Hirsch and below in the mornings are now

Guide Mike Nielsen has been getting a mix of macks and browns. The macks have been putting on an early bite. Browns are being picked later. Browns are in the three pound class. Macks are in the four to six pound class. Macks are in 40 to 60 feet of water feeding on crawfish. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552, Mike Nielsen (530)

There are good conditions to the Prosser outflow and then it gets bigger below the Boca outlet. Use caddis during the day. Green drake nymphs offered along the bottom may work. Golden Stones and PMDs work during the day. Further downstream means nymphing with heavy gear. Large lures retrieved along the bank can work. (530) 587-4844

Lake is three feet from full. Trout fishing has been hampered by wind. Trollers go 15 feet deep with Rapalas or Needlefish. Shore anglers aren’t having much luck. Bass anglers are getting smallmouth from the north end of the lake with crankbaits. A lot of the smallmouths are in the two pound range. A few have weighed three pounds. Popular colors are firetiger or black

Fishing the Truckee is as good as it gets for May

by MATT KOLES
Fishing is good all over on the Truckee River. Floated on the Eastside yesterday, it was about 90 degrees, the water is a bit high and dirty, we lost some big fish and fishing was solid all day. Caddis have already popped, along with pmds mid-afternoon. Roll out the G-6 on 'em, which ripped lips yesterday. In the Hirsch, the water is up over 700,

Guide Mike Nielsen targeted lake trout on Wednesday afternoon and boated nine to 11 pounds. Shallow water bite has been up and down. Some days there are browns, some days none. Lake trout in the mid-teens are being caught. There are rumors of 30 pound lakers being hooked. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552, Gene St. Denis, Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

This has been a stramge fishing season at Pyramid Lake, did it finish before it started?

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The water is starting to get pretty warm. As the spawn starts to peter out and water continues to warm the fish will start to head back out into deeper water for the summer. This has been one of, if not the strangest years in a long time at Pyramid. It seems to have ended before it ever got going. There are still some fish
