Western Nevada Fish Reports

Like a Ghost Town on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
This place feels like a ghost town, Hirschdale, the Truckee River. The summer tourists are gone, rafters, kayakers, illegal campers, people that leave their beer cans for me to clean up, and fly fisherman. Most of the leaves are off the Cottonwoods, mornings are cold and crisp. This is when I like to go out and fish my zone. I have the whole place

Desert County

by MATT KOLES
The desert country (Truckee, Nevada side) is fishing well, so well in fact Kevin from Reno fished with me two days this week. A lot of folks don't think there's Trout down in the desert on the Truckee River; I can assure you there are. You won't see me down there in the summer, but this time of year it's on fire, the rattlers are

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Fishing has been improving. Still no large fish but plenty of cutthroat in the two pound range. There was rumor of a 16 pounder caught near the Blockhouse. Big fish should be moving up with the colder weather. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Water temps are in the mid-40s so best fishing is downstream. Big stones and small zebra copper Johns, Hogan’s red-headed stepchild work well – anything with red is a good trigger.  After Nov. 15 the only open river will be the Truckee between Trout Creek and stateline and the Little Truckee between Boca and Prosser. All lakes except Martis Lake are open year round. (530)

Surfer turns Fly Fisherman, gets a lesson on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
I got an email from a dude the other day that told me he quit the world of competitive surfing so he can devote his time to fly fishing. He just wanted to learn a few more things and try to hook some nice fish. Not that he didn't enjoy surfing anymore, but he was over the whole scene. I thought rad, I'll hook this kid

A lesson in how to fly fish when it's down right cold

by MATT KOLES
It's damn cold up here on the East side of the Sierra's. Mid winter type of cold for the beginning of November. It's cold down in the desert too. 24 degrees yesterday at noon with a strong wind blowing. Ice in the guides type of cold. Today, a little warmer, but not much. Remember, you can always stir some fish up out of their cozy

Gilligan's Truckee River Fishing Report 11/4/11

by MATT KOLES
It's a cold proposition this time of year on the California side. It's been in the low teens in the morning. Yesterday, 9 degrees at my house in Hirschdale, today 18, with 4" of snow. Time to start fishing a little later. Have breakfast, drink your coffee slowly, wait for it to warm up, and then hit the river. On the Nevada side things are

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The mackinaw bite has slowed but macks to eight pounds are being coaxed up and limits can be achieved with perservance. Most of the fish are two to six pounds. Best action is off the Tahoe City Shelf. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Boat anglers continue to out-produce shore anglers by a wide margin. Best area is north of Pelican near Warrior Point. Nothing larger than eight pounds has been caught yet. Water temperature is 62 degrees but that will drop with the change in weather. (775) 476-040

Truckee River Fish Report

Big fish are hard to come by but good numbers of trout are being caught nymphing. Blue wing olives will work. (530) 587-4844

A Change in the Weather means a change in the fishing on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Looks like this will be that last week of Indian Summer, highs will be in the 30-40's, with snow and rain for the rest of the week here in the Hirsch. I'm actually a bit excited about it. Clouds and snow mean two things this time of year, streamer's, and b-dubs. G.G.S. headquarters will have the fire stoked, and the beer cold. Elliot got her

The Truckee River in the Nevada Desert

by MATT KOLES
Been spending most of my time in the desert lately. It's still in the seventies down there, a little warm for my liking. If your patient though, you can be rewarded.

The Nature Conservacy Section of the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
East of Reno, in the desert, there are trout, sagebrush, and coyotes. The Nature Conservancy section of the Truckee River is just coming into shape, a solid winter trout fishery. November is when she shines, when the river and brown trout put on their gold fall colors. It's the Truckee River version of an old Spaghetti Western. These are some photos from yesterday.

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Mackinaw bite has been fair off the Tahoe City shelf. Macks to 8 and 9 pounds are being caught. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Trollers are out-producing shore anglers by a 3:1 ratio. Best spot has been the east shore. Another good spot has been Warrior Point. Shore fishermen have been struggling as fish are deep. Water temperature is in the low 60s and trout will come closer to the surface as the weather cools. (775) 476-0400

The Big Fish are on the move in the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
It's good, real good, anywhere on the river. All it took was some colder, overcast weather. In one day the fishing went from okay, to pretty damn good. It's pumpkin weather now, and them big fish are back on the move. Fish are chasing streamers, eating nymphs, and poking their heads up for blue wings floating by. Think baetis, October caddis, stones, worms, eggs,

How the Weather Affects Fishing the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
Weather wise, this sunny ass weather we're having ain't helping the fishing any. Indian Summer has set in, and frankly, I want some streamer weather. The ten day forecast looks for much of the same. The fishing ain't bad on both sides of the Truckee River, CA and NV, but it would be nice tossing some bwos, and streamers around. I guess November will be

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The mackinaw action has been very good fishing Dollar and Sugarpine points. Many limits have been caught in the 2 to 6 pound class, with a few in the 3 to 8 pound class. My experience has been, the colder the weather the bigger the fish.  Anglers have been trolling dodgers or blades followed by a live minnow or even a

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Cutthroat bite has been good. Boaters with access to deeper, cooler water are getting most of the fish. Nothing larger than 10 pounds has been caught yet. Anglers are averaging 3.7 fish per trip and it’s taking 1.5 hours to get each fish, according to surveys. (530) 541-8208

The Party's Over Serious Fishing Begins on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
The party's over, Chris left to go back home to Bozeman, and I'll be in full guide mode for the next couple weeks. It was nice to spend a few days on the river, fishing and talking shit to each other. We both managed a couple nice browns, and lost some nice fish. The weather is ridiculous up here, almost to hot, and I think
