Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The lake opens to fishing on Jan. 1. Launching will be no problem and there was aggressive trout planting in the fall. Barring any unforeseen storm the opener should be good. There is a lot of bank access, too. A derby will be run from Topaz Lodge to celebrate the opener. (775) 266-3550

The Nevada side of the Truckee is still really good

by MATT KOLES
For it being Winter, the fishing is pretty good down in the desert. If the East winds aren't blowing, it's actually pretty warm. We need some snow, that's what keeps our little town of Truckee on the map. If their ain't snow, or your pass is blacked out for the holidays, you can always fish. Charles and Neil did today.

Fishing for larger mackinaw is good. Macks are averaging two to six pounds but macks weighing 8 to 11 pounds are being caught. Best action is off Cal/Neva, Dollar Point and Sugar Pine Point. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552

Spider Point was the best spot last week during an overall slow week. Trollers do much better. Large fish have been few.  (775) 476-0400

The Nevada side of the Truckee is the place to fish, and why!

by MATT KOLES
Things have got cold up in these parts, morning air temps are hovering in the zero-to low teens here in Hirschdale. Good luck if you're fishing the California side. It just doesn't warm up enough this time of year on the Cali side of the Truckee River for any real consistent fishing. Your best bet this time of year is to fish the Nevada

Trollers continue to out-produce shore anglers by a better than two-to-one average. Big fish are rare. Most being caught are in the 20 to 24 inch range and those have to be released. There’s a productive stretch of water between Pelican and Crosby’s Lodge. (775) 476-0400

And this one got away while on the Truckee, Bummer

by MATT KOLES
This ain't Livingston MT, but it sure in the hell has felt like it the last few days. We've been pummeled by wind. My face looks like Jim Harrison's. The wind can lead a man to drink, instead of Jim's Vodka in the afternoon, I choose a good IPA. Of course, I was stupid enough to guide in it yesterday, which in turn actually

Conditions are ideal for cutthroat trout. Water temperature is 51 degrees and larger fish are moving up. Some boats are getting more than two dozen trout per outing and a good number of cutts are larger than 24 inches, most are in the 17-inch class. Warrior Point is a good spot. Boats are out-producing shore anglers 2:1. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fishing Report 11/29/11

Mild, is the key word weather wise up here. 50's in Truckee, 6o's in Reno. Water temps are in the -not bad- mid 40's in the desert, and cold, but average, low 40's, near Truckee. Hit 'em on the head, really, fish do not like to run your flies down this time of year. The dude with the best drift wins. Good drifts, and

Talk About "Fat" Rainbows, see these Truckee River Specimens

by MATT KOLES
Them rainbows we've been catching down in the desert lately seem like they've had a bit to much of Grandma's Thanksgiving dinner. They look stuffed, except they don't like to sit on the couch afterwards, they like pulling hard in the current. Mr. Trout from Reno, who brought along his twin brother this time, roped them some fat trouts yesterday on the Truckee River. It's

Gene St. Denis is guiding clients to 10 to 15 mack hook-ups per day and landing getting six to eight per day. Some are two-pounders and others are five to six pounds. He’s using dodgers and minnows in 100 to 150 feet of water. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552

Fishing is very good for numbers but large fish are rare. The first 10-pound plus fish of the season was registered this week. It weighed 13.8 pounds and came from Windless Bay on a spoon. Otherwise there are plenty of four- to six-pound cutts being caught.  (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fishing Report 11/20/11

Fishing continues to be great down on the Nevada side of the Truckee River. The California side of the river is a bit slow, due to cold weather and water temps. It's much warmer on the Nevada side, and that's what it takes to make the fish more active. Fish have moved into slower deeper water, so adjusting your tactics is the key. Pass up

What do the Truckee River Fly Fisherman and Music have in common?

by MATT KOLES
I met a dude back in January, the 1st to be exact. We went out and fished the Truckee River. It was cold and I was hungover. We had the usual small talk, got any kids? wife? did you grow up in Truckee? We also talked about music, and than realised we had similiar interests, other than fly fishing of course. This is Justin's new

Excellent Rainbow Action on the Nevada side of the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Some of the rainbows we've been putting in the net down through the desert have been unbelievable this year. Maybe it's due to the high water we've had, I don't know, but some of them are ridiculously big. Kevin from Reno floated with me again yesterday, perfect weather, and the fish were on the grab. "Come on Mr. Trout", as he likes to say. We

Mackinaw bite is decent 100 to 200 feet down, prime depth is around 150. Troll slowly with dodgers, flashers and large minnows. Large lures can work on occasion. Macks average two to six pounds but an 8 pounder and 10 pounder were caught this week. Hot spots have been Cal-Neva Point, Agate Bay and the Tahoe City shelf. Toplining has been producing rainbows. A 10-pounder

Water is cooling and fishing from shore is improving. Pelican, Warrior and Blockhouse are the top spots. Trollers are doing much better. Few large fish are being caught. A lot of keeper-size fish (17- to 20-inches and over 24) are being thrown back, according creel surveys. (775) 476-0400
