Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Flows are ideal. Best fishing is east of Truckee to stateline. Nymphing is the best way to go but there are caddis hatches in the evening. (530) 587-4844

Truckee River Fishing Report 10/8/11

by MATT KOLES
It don't get much better. Fall is here, them cottonwoods got some gold on them, and there's snow up on the Twin Sisters. If you can't catch fish now on the Truckee River, than you should sell the fly rod and strictly stick to golf. Both states are fishing really well, with them big browns starting to show. Of course, it's been another couple days

On the Truckee With The Little Brother I…..

by MATT KOLES
Larry and I, the little brother I never wanted, hit the conservancy for a few hours the other day. We hit up America's next top run, and though we didn't kill it, we still manged to catch a few. Larry's off again, Monday, to ride his bike to South America. Second times a charm I guess. If he makes it through Mexico, I'll be impressed.

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

Fishing is good here. Monday trip had limits of macks and kokanee. Kokanee are turning red but the meat is in good shape. There are a lot of kokes moving into Taylor Creek. Macks are averaging three to six pounds but 10 pounders are being caught. Macks are being caught at 180 feet. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

Last week's opener was pretty good. They caught fish all over. Still down around 60 feet or so and they come up for feeding excursions. There is a ton of bait fish this year and trout are fatter this year.  There’s a few places along the shore where there are deep dropoff. Blockhouse is best. Biggest fish was a 7.2 pounder

One Fish Was Landed, but What A Fish!

by MATT KOLES
What a crazy last three days it's been. Friday, I had one of my worst guide days all year, if we were having fish for dinner, we would have have gone to bed hungry. Saturday, Hector and Jim from Fresno came up, greeted by a 12 pack of their local IPA, some clouds and cooler weather, I knew we would hook some fish. Walking down

"Gilligan" on Truckee River Overload

by MATT KOLES
I used to have an old Suburu Justy, it was a three banger, and that damn thing always overheated. I'm running on three cylinders myself, overheating every afternoon in the sun, on a vitamin D overload, and waiting for some fall weather. In a month, or two, I'll be wishing it was 80 again. Near record temps this week combined with a long summer of

Guide Mike Nielsen continues to bring back regular limits of kokanee and mackinaw.

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Flows are in great shape below the Boca outlet. Mayflies, crayfish, large stoneflies and streamers get quality trout. Cast upstream and dead drift downstream. Hoppers also are prevalent. Hit the water early. Fishing is good. (530) 587-4844

A Change in the Weather Causes the Fish in the Truckee to Turn On

by MATT KOLES
Sometimes, all it takes is some overcast skies to get big fish to turn on. Susan got this big brown (look at the smile on her face) yesterday across the border on the Truckee River. He ate my #16 baetis emerger, or soft hackle. Todd, her husband, lost one as big, just couldn't chase it downstream. He then went back to the same spot

Fly Fishing is good on the Truckee River -- and it will get better

by MATT KOLES
Fishing is pretty damn good here on the Truckee River, and with some fall weather expected this weekend, it will only get better. I've been spending most of my time on the California side of the river, and the fishing is solid, in fact the best it's been all year. I've had some good reports of October Caddis on the upper river, but haven't seen

Fall is an excellent time for Fly Fishing on the Truckee and this year could be one of the best!

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Fall is here! The water is cooling daily on the Truckee and arguably the best time of the year for fly fishing is over the next couple of months. This would be a great time to make some plans to do some fishing in the Reno-Tahoe area for sure. Wet wading season is just about over so patch up your waders and get out on

East Carson River fly fishing conditions are excellent for this time of year

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Carson River Flows are down to 146 CFS. They are really holding on this summer and the conditions are great for this time of year. The water is really clear and a stealthy approach is a must. Longer casts and longer leaders with dry flies like Adams, Cahill's and Hoppers are worth a try. Nymphing in the deeper runs with either a dry dropper or

Morning holds the best bite. Crayfish patterns, streamers, dark stone patterns trailing a small mayfly will get trout. Best stretch is Glenshire to the stateline. (530) 587-4844

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
This lake closes on Sept. 30. Fishing has been slow. Water temperature is 68 degrees. Bowcutts and rainbows will be planted after the closure by the state of Nevada. Fingerling rainbows were planted recently by California. The lake reopens to fishing Jan. 1. (775) 266-3550

The Next Generation of Trout on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
Thanks to consecutive high water years we have had an explosion of young fish, especially fish in the 8-14″ class, here, on the California side of the Truckee River. Job security for me, and a healthy trout river for all. We've been hooking tons of these guys lately, one can keep their rod bent all day right now. Of course, there are big fish too,

Streamers, dry droppers, dries, the 'ole "thingamabobber" will all work fly fishing the Truckee now

by MATT KOLES
Fall is for sure here, especially on the CA side of the river. The morning fog blanket has got the water cooled, and most fish are moving back into some softer holding lye's. Down in Nevada, on the Truckee River, it's still a bit warm, and fish are still stuffed down a bit in the faster stuff, but the fishing is great. Pick a state,

Lake Tahoe Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Lake trout bite is strong. Mike Nielsen has been trolling from 90 to 220 feet deep and getting macks three to six pounds. An 11 pounder was caught earlier in the week. Kokanee bite has slowed but a few are being caught on the jig 65 to 75 feet deep. Most are still silver. Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Trout fishing is best downstream from town where there is colder water. Head toward Floriston and the Nevada border. Use larger streamers for browns. October caddis should start hatching. Dry fly action is slowing. (530) 587-4844

How the Fall Fog Affects Fly Fishing on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
We've had some good afternoon soakings around here the last few days. All the moisture has got the fall Hirschdale fog bank starting a bit earlier than usual. You can count on fog in Hirschdale every morning, usually through November. We sit in a bit of a bowl here. It's a bit early for it, but the fish like it, and it can dramatically alter

Big "Golden Stones" Are on the menu for Truckee River Browns and Rainbows

by MATT KOLES
In both states, California and Nevada, September is starting out nicely, and the Truckee River is producing some nice fish. Most of the summer bugs are waning down, such as the yellow stones, and the caddis. There are big golden stones on the menu though, something that's been happening late in the year for the last few. When I mean big, they are about

Fall Is the time to fish the Truckee

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Fall is creeping in fast. With it come cooler days and nights. The hatches get going again and the fishing gets really good. Kids are back in school, the rafters go away and the fishermen get to take the river back over. The water conditions remain in fantastic shape and the fly fishing on the Truckee should remain good for months to come. California Some of

The special regulation stretch has good access and is fishing well. Stonefly nymphs and caddis pupaes are working well, as are streamers and crayfish patterns. (530) 587-4844
