Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Clear, cold water with excellent flows and active bugs have created ideal fishing conditions on the Truckee. The hatches this week have been plentiful and varied, with a lot of the bugs delayed from coming off this spring coinciding with the typical hatches for early July. The spring hatches such as March Browns, BWO’s, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, and the ever-plentiful midges have been mingling

The river has really shaped up in the last 2 weeks

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The river has really shaped up in the last 2 weeks, and the Truckee is fishing in its true form. We would typically be approaching the dog days of summer by this point, but this year has been quite a bit different, and only now are we starting to see typical conditions for our river. It seems to be a safe prediction that the Truckee

Great reports back from the first 2 weeks of the season

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Great reports back from the first 2 weeks of the season. Healthy trout averaging 17 inches with a few 20 plus showing up already.  NDOW crews were recently up at Knott Creek Reservoir checking access, water levels, and working on a fish survey. The reservoir is accessible from both the north and south roads. The south road going up Cove Creek is in better shape

The opener at Onion was excellent

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Just as anticipated, the opener at Onion was excellent. Fish averaged 13 inches but several people found some carryovers to 19 inches.  The road from the west side is open to access Onion Valley Reservoir. Recent rains have created gullies and ruts in some areas, so be careful when navigating these areas. Most wet flies, spinners, and bait work well at onion. The hardest part

Things are firing off on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Flows have dropped to normal levels. I repeat, flows have dropped to normal levels. Around 650 cfs here in Hirschdale. That’s a normal flow for this time of year. We have a lot of water backed up in the lakes and res’s, so we’re sitting pretty all fall and next winter. I would not be surprised if the river kicks up again when they let

The reservoir is approximately 279,500 acre feet. That is almost 90% full! With the rising water level, beach space is extremely limited. Many beaches, such as Beach 7 and Beach 5, are underwater or will be within a few days. If you decide to come out to camp, please be courteous and respectful to your neighbors. We anticipate crowded conditions so please share beach space.

Still feeling and fishing like spring on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Happy Fathers Day. Good day grilling and watching the Giants spank the Dodgers. Still feeling and fishing like spring on the Truckee River. Big fish here and there, not a lot of small ones, and perfect weather. Been in the low 70’s about everyday. 1,170 cfs here in Hirschdale. The river has come way down. Still a bit big, but really not all that bad. She’s getting

Truckee River Fishing Report

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The Truckee has been holding similar flows this week when compared to last week, although when inspected closely you will see that there is certainly a downward trend happing as far as what is coming off the hillside. The regularity in flows is partially from the federal ‘Water Master’ moving dam releases up and down out of each reservoir, and those pesky thunderstorms that we

With better water clarity, the California side of the Truckee River has fished best

by RENO FLY SHOP
The Truckee River has dropped in flow significantly since the beginning of June! The reno gauge has decreased from over 3,200 cfs in early June to around a daily peak of 2,000 cfs now in mid June.   Those who have fished the Truckee River over the last few weeks have been rewarded greatly for their effort. As discussed in earlier reports, tactics and techniques must change

Flows have been dropping on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Flows have been dropping on the Truckee River. Big and steady at around 1,700 cfs, here in Hirschdale. Down from 4,000 cfs just a few weeks ago. Have we seen the big run-off? I guess. Never did get as big as ’18. I’m surprised Rivers cleared up pretty good around here, little dirty down below, but not bad. Still getting calls about the river being high. Yeah, it’s
