Ice thickness is variable across the reservoir

Ice thickness is variable across the reservoir, measuring between 4″ and 6″ in most areas surveyed, with some areas of thinner ice. Always take caution and drill test holes. There are multiple pressure ridges that formed across the lake and anglers should steer clear of. Daytime high’s have been up to 50 degrees, resulting in puddles on top of the ice. Approximately 50% of the reservoir is covered with a thin layer of ice. The southern half of the reservoir has open water and should be conducive to shoreline angling. Anglers could use nightcrawlers and spinners to catch trout this winter. The fishery is recovering after significant drawdown events.

The reservoir lost ice since last week, but is still mostly covered in ice. The area north of the old dam is a mix of 4- to 7-inch-thick ice.  The quality of ice in this area was deemed good and should provide with good fishing to anglers. The ice that was firm black ice two weeks ago is now soft and fair to poor quality.

We have some good news! After measuring several locations off of the boat ramp, we received ice thickness measurements of anywhere from 4-6”. Please remember that if you are out on the ice, the ice thickness can be more or less depending on where you are at on the reservoir. So please exercise caution when out on the ice and always avoid sketchy looking areas

Anglers will do well on rainbow trout with nightcrawlers, PowerBait, and other lures that can be jigged. Some unsafe ice reported at the boat ramp and parts of the collection ditch. Expect Harrison Pass to be impassable after the recent snow. Anglers fishing the collection ditch are reporting fair to good angling for trout with trout over 20 inches being reported. Fall stocking has also increased angler success at the south springs. Fly anglers are reported success with streamers, leeches and chironomids.

Ice has now formed over the majority of the reservoir. Since the ice is still newly formed, we are unsure of thickness and do not recommend being out on it. We are seeing people beginning to ice fish and it is much too early. We will be having warmer temps for the next week or so and we will see how the ice holds up.

State Park staff will take ice measurements when it is safe to do so. If ice conditions become safe, trout fishing should be good for fish between 16″ and 22″.
