Wild Horse is covered with an average of about 12-14 inches of inches of good hard ice covered with about 6 inches of snow. With the snow predicted this weekend, it may be even deeper by the time you read this. Cave Lake is covered with ten to twelve inches of ice with six to ten inches of slush and snow on top at last report. This lake is covered approximately 10 inches of ice with two to three inches of slush and snow at last report. Expect good fishing using the usual assortment of jigs, worms and PowerBait. Local anglers like to use a black marabou jig tipped with a worm.

South Fork Reservoir has 5-6 inches of good ice with a couple of inches of snow on top. Fishing has been good for 15-18" fish. Fish in shallower water with most of today's fish caught in water that was 6 feet or shallower. One angler caught 4 nice trout within 6 feet of shore!

Construction on the reservoir is complete and the low pool area even held some water after the rains earlier in the summer. Pray for snow next winter to fill it and if this happens then NDOW will stock it with trout, largemouth bass and bluegill in the spring of 2016. It all depends on Mother Nature.

There is a thin sheet of unsafe ice here. Like Wild Horse, this ice is generally not safe until after Christmas. Single digit overnight lows and daytime highs below freezing are forecast for the next week. Fishing is still fair to good for trout depending upon the day, the angler and where you are fishing along the collection ditch. The go-to fly seems to be the hares ear, with the pheasant tail nymph close behind. Also, wooly buggers and flies that have some red in them also seem to be working. With the recent precipitation, the water level is up just a bit. But not enough to make much of a difference. However, anglers have been getting up to Wild Horse and catching fish averaging between three and five pounds. Most anglers are using worms or worms with marshmallows. One group fished from a boat, while the others were from shore.

While the water at Wilson is clearing, it is still off color, though fishing has picked up here. The stream below has flows that are fishable and one angler reported decent luck catching 14 to 15 inch fish below the falls. Wildhorse Fish Report

With warmer air temperatures, the surface water temps have climbed into the 50’s and reaching the mid 50’s by afternoon. There are still a few fish cruising the shorelines trying to spawn, but not many, and that should be winding down soon.
