Trout Are Taking A Variety of Baits and Lures

This early in the year, the shoreline should be mostly free of aquatic vegetation. Trout are taking a variety of baits and lures. PowerBait and night crawlers will catch fish off the bottom. Bead head Wooly Buggers, Prince Nymphs and snail patterns are generally productive. Small lures in gold and chartreuse colorations can do well also.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife planted 5000 tiger trout and more than 4000 rainbow trout over the last week. Anglers have been catching stocked tigers and rainbows ranging from 9 to11 inches. Night crawlers and PowerBait will bring in the trout. No reports of bass being caught.

Night crawlers are working best for stocked rainbows. You can fish them with and without bobbers. NDOW planted 5,000 rainbow trout last week. Anglers are still getting out and spacing out. Daytime temperatures are in the 50s. All facilities are open.

Trout are taking a variety of PowerBait colors. Many anglers are having success using night crawlers off points in the Big Bend area. Smallmouth bass also are hitting baits. Seasonal trout plants will end in April. Anglers are reporting a slow striper bite along this stretch of the river.

Smallmouth and largemouth bass are in pre-spawn mode and can be found in coves near Cottonwood Cove. Action continues to improve for anglers fishing out of Willow Beach. Trout imitation lures and swimbaits have worked well for 4- to 6-pound rainbows. Stripers are biting between Willow Beach and Cottonwood Cove.

Seasonal trout plants have ended. Ponds at Veteran’s Memorial, Floyd Lamb, and Hafen Park all received the last plant of the season. As the waters continue to warm, expect less activity from trout and more from catfish and bluegill.

We only talked to two anglers who fished the ranch this week and they had a blast! They each caught over 20 fish, all on nymphs. Small-ish stonefly patterns as well as small baetis patterns did the trick for them. They also fished a few soft hackles and prince nymphs. If you want to book some time on the river just give us a call!
