Nevada Fish Reports

Trout fishing has picked up with anglers doing well near the inlet of the lake for both browns and rainbows. The south end of the lake is starting to ice up and with the colder temperatures more ice will be forming though it won’t be safe. The brown trout spawn is winding down. Overnight temperatures are dropping below freezing, but trout action has been good overall. Rainbow and tiger trout are taking a variety of spinning lures and spoons. Bait anglers have been doing well from the fishing dock and the dam using the usual PowerBait in rainbow, green or orange colorations, as well as a chunk of night crawler combined with a mini marshmallow.

Freezing overnight temperatures are creating icy conditions early in the morning along the shoreline, so please use caution along the dam. Rainbow trout action has been very good. Anglers, fishing from boat or floatables, are having the best action. Water levels continue to rise, making fishing along the dam even better. The fish are taking PowerBait in rainbow, orange or green colorations, as well as

Anglers are landing stripers with anchovies from Davis Dam down through Casino Row. Trout are hiding under docks and in areas with thick vegetation above Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area. Spinners, such as Rooster Tails or Panther Martins, are working well in addition to night crawlers.  The Big Bend area has also given up a few catfish. They are taking anchovies.

Anglers are bringing in black bass on plastics or silver or white swimbaits in coves above Cottonwood Cove. Stripers are taking anchovies and deep diving lures between Willow Beach and Cottonwood Marina. The rainbow trout is slow, but some fish are biting on gold and silver Rooster Tails.

Fishing action is steady for bass and catfish. The bass are hitting on plastics in the back ponds at Floyd Lamb. Catfish are biting on night crawlers. Water temperatures have remained low enough that the Nevada Department of Wildlife is hoping to start seasonal trout plants this week. Stocked rainbows love night crawler pieces and PowerBait.

Smallmouth and largemouth bass are hitting swimbaits in variations of silver and white in the coves west of Callville Bay. The Boulder Island and Las Vegas Bay areas are producing stripers but mostly in the 1- to 2-pound range.  Catfish are hitting on anchovies by the Hemenway fishing pier. Many are around 3 pounds.

Fishing has been fair at Squaw Creek Reservoir. Fly fisherman slowly trolling larger buggers and leech patterns are getting the attention of the occasional trout near the dam and in open water. The inlet has been productive in the afternoons and evening with sheep creek specials, Zug bugs, and midge pupa slowly retrieved. Spin fisherman using larger spinners are out fishing all other methods.

Wall Canyon continues to fish well for trout and the occasional bass. Fly fishing with snail patterns and midge pupa has been excellent with a clear intermediate line slowly retrieved. Afternoon and evenings have been best along the dam and near the inlet with spinners and bait near the bottom. 

The river is in excellent condition. Flows are at prime fall levels and the cool overnight temperatures have kept the trout happy. Fishing mid-day will continue to be good until the cold really sets in. East of Reno some BWO mayflies are still hatching in the afternoons. Flows are finally down to winter levels on the East Walker. We’ve seen 250-300 cfs all summer long making for some challenging fishing. A few caddis may be out in the evening with a few sporadic midge and mayfly hatching during the day. Fish seem to be holding deep at the moment with very few risers seen during the day. Trout fishing has picked back up again with the cooler overnight temps. The lake is currently ice free. Fishing for bass has slowed considerably. Majority of the surface activity is now limited to trout in the evenings. Small spinners continue to produce trout all day in deeper water. Bait fishing with dough bait and worms will catch trout most of the day.

Fishing is slow for walleye, crappie, wiper and catfish. A few walleye are being caught slowly trolling minnow imitations or worm harnesses. Trolling faster with rapala minnow imitations is a good method for walleye as well. For crappie use bright colored jigs in the flooded vegetation. The few that fly fish Chimney Reservoir tend to stick with the chartreuse and yellow Clouser minnows. Note that
