Nevada Fish Reports

Thanks to the work done on Jiggs, the lake is holding water and is approximately 40 percent of capacity. Because it has been dry the past few years, there are currently no fish in the lake. NDOW is planning to stock it with trout any day now.

Wildhorse Reservoir - Water levels are up! The island off of the state park boat ramp is only about three to four feet from being covered with water. The lake is approximately 40% full and you can launch a boat, though expect fishing to be slow. NDOW will be stocking Wildhorse with its full complement of approximately 100,000 fish this spring and fall.

The road is rutted, but still in fairly good shape. The lake is spilling heavily and anglers report fish below the spillway and the falls. The water is turbid and approximately 50 degrees. The road to Angel Lake is closed. Generally, NDOT has the road open just before Memorial Day.

Fishing has been hit or miss as one day anglers are doing well and the next, it is slow. However, anglers are reporting just as many or more, good days than bad. Fishing has been slow in most of the reservoirs this past week, but should start to pick up once the spring storm systems move out and temperatures warm up. Visitors can expect muddy road conditions so the Nevada Department of Wildlife encourages visitors to use caution while traveling on the management area.

Cave Lake is ice free and the water quality is very good. Fishing has been fair to good for 10 to 13 inch fish using the usual worms and PowerBait. Small Cave Lake specials, wooly buggers and the usual nymphs such as prince, hares ears and pheasant tail nymphs should all work. The lake is now ice free and the water level continues to rise. Fish have been seen dimpling the surface, probably taking midges or mayfly emergers. Fishing should be good on the warmer afternoons.

Illipah is ice free and the lake level continues to rise. Fishing has been fair to good for rainbows. Most anglers have been using worms, PowerBait, and spinners. Hares ears, chironomids and olive or black wooly bugers are the ticket for fly fishermen.

Fishing continues to be good around the lake for rainbow trout. The fish are taking a variety of baits and lures. Fly-fishermen have been doing well with Woolly Buggers in brown, black or olive colorations.

Anglers are finding some success at the upper marsh for panfish and catfish. Mealworms or night crawlers below a bobber will catch fish.

Below Davis Dam and along Casino Row Anglers have found good fishing for rainbow trout. Some anglers have gone home with their limit. Seasonal trout plants have ended, so trout anglers will have to try different locations to find the fish. Largemouth bass are biting on worms. Lake Mohave is starting to produce some good stripers as well. Black bass action has been good when the weather cooperates. Largemouth are showing signs of spawning activity.

Largemouth bass fishing has picked up because it’s spawning season and they are easier to find. Look for white circles with a gravel bottom in shallow water. NDOW encourages anglers to practice catch-and-release when possible during the spawning period. Striper fishing is picking up as well.
