Stripers in Deep Water

Looks like you can expect a calm weekend ahead. Anglers have found some success fishing in deeper water for striped bass. Smaller fish are being caught from the shoreline near Government Wash. Live shad and anchovies are proven bait options. There are no reports for smallmouth or largemouth bass this week.

Construction is Complete

Construction on the reservoir is complete and the low pool area even held some water after the rains earlier in the summer. Pray for snow next winter to fill it and if this happens then NDOW will stock it with trout, largemouth bass and bluegill in the spring of 2016. It all depends on Mother Nature.

Ruby Lake Fish Report

Harrison Pass is closed due to snow and anglers should plan on accessing the Refuge through Secret Pass. Secret Pass does experience drifting near the top, so take care here as well. Wild Horse is covered with an average of about 12-14 inches of inches of good hard ice covered with about 6 inches of snow. With the snow predicted this weekend, it may be even deeper by the time you read this. The road is 4WD only and the ice here is approximately six inches thick with a crust of snow on top as of Wednesday, Jan 13. Fishing has been fair to good using the usual PowerBait, worms or corn. Snow is in the forecast for this area this weekend, so go prepared.

Cave Lake is covered with ten to twelve inches of ice with six to ten inches of slush and snow on top at last report. This lake is covered approximately 10 inches of ice with two to three inches of slush and snow at last report. Expect good fishing using the usual assortment of jigs, worms and PowerBait. Local anglers like to use a black marabou jig tipped with a worm.

Ice conditions are excellent throughout the reservoir. The ice ranges between 10 and 20 inches thick. Anglers are finding success using night crawlers with a bit of marshmallow. Mealworms also have been bringing in fish. Park management encourages everyone venturing out on the ice to use caution as ice conditions can change rapidly.

Ice conditions are good, but there are some thin areas at the upper end where the stream comes in. Anglers have been seen on the ice, but there is no current report on fishing success. Use caution on the ice.

Anglers continue to find good action for stocked rainbow trout. Since striped bass feed on trout they are not far away. Anchovies and lures are working to catch the bigger fish. Shore fishing has been the best. The river elevation has been somewhat variable.

Striper fishing is slower on the river. Rusty’s Riviera had an angler bring in an 8.26-pound striper taken from shore using a lure with a trout pattern. Best spots reported are near the dam and above the powerlines.

Striped Bass Biting on Shad

Striped bass are feeding on shad outside Las Vegas Wash. Most fish are around two pounds. Shad have been hard to find, but those who find them have also had success for stripers. The best fishing has been out in the deeper waters, 100-150 feet. Shore fishing has been slow. Clearer skies and warmer weather should make for a good fishing weekend.

More storms adding snow to our snowpack this week, we’re having a good winter in the Tahoe region. Flows on the Truckee River are anywhere from about 50-Truckee-140-Hirschdale-200-Nevada.
